King Tut: Was it Murder?

Introduction

Welcome. Your mission is to solve a mysterious murder case. The Dailey Tribune has resently leaked information concerning this case.  The world famous King Tutankhmun, known by most as King Tut, may have been murdered. Who would do such a thing? Why would they kill the boy king? Did they kill him for his golden treasures, or did they want to take over the powerful country of Egypt? Could this all be a mistake and the boy pharaoh really died of natural causes? You and your renouned team have been hired by the Egyptian government to determine if King Tut was indeed murdered.

Task

You will meet with your team of 4 or 5 and choose your roles:

  • Meddical examiner- Your role is to investigate and record the medical evidence found in the research.  You will make a judgement about how convincing the website information is and if it is able to support the various theories about how the boy king dies.
  • Reporter- Your role is to question the evidence and murder theories that have been in the news and provide some information which throws doubt on the idea of murder. If Tut was not murdered, then what could have caused his death at such a young age?
  • Archaelologist- Your job is to provide some background detail on Tutankhmun. This should help explaine why he was murdered. 
  • History Professor- Your role is to examine information about Tut's life, his early death, and who would have been an enemy that would want him dead.
  • Historian-Your job is to research what was going on in Egypt and the area during King Tut's reign. Discover who knew the Pharaoh well. Who would he have trusted? Who would gain power and wealth if he died?
Process

Now that everyone has a role, you are ready to begin your search for the truth.  The first step in doing so is conducting research. You will find websites that will provide the information you need to reach a conclusion concerning how Tut died.  Click on the link for your professional area of expertise. Read the information and take notes. Use your T-Chart  graphic organizer to help you record what you discover. Make sure you look for the answers to the following questions:

  • How old was King Tut when he died?
  • Does the website suggest anyone was involved in Tut's death?
  • What did you discover about the boy Pharaoh's death?
  • Who, if anyone, does the source suggest may have killed him?
  • Who took over ruling the country of Egypt after Tut died?
  • What other facts did you discover?
  • What do other experts think could have happened to Tutakhmun?

The more information your team gathers, the more in-depth your understanding will be concerning the life, times and death of Tut. You are investigation one of the great mysteries of the Ancient world. Realize that your role is vital in solving the mystery.

Now meet with your team to discuss the facts, and theories you uncovered. Talk about what you believe happened and why. Be sure you can support your beliefs with evidence.

                           You are ready to write a Persuasive Essay.

Make a decesion. What do you really think happened to King Tutankhmun? Make sure you have an opinion and stick with it. Your opening should state: I believe King Tut was murdered, or I do not believe that King Tut was murdered.

Paragraph 1- Clearly state your opinion. List at least three reasons why you think King Tut was, or wasn't murdered.  You will need notes, facts, details, from your research to back up your reasons.

Paragraph 2- State your first reason and back it up with material from your readings.  be sure to consult others in your group to get more information from other sources.

Paragrahp 3- State your second reason and back it up with information from your websites. Be sure to check with others in your group to get additional information.
