Satire is a form of writing that uses ridicule, irony, or exaggeration to criticize something—often targeting cultural trends, politics, human nature, or societal issues. Through satire, writers expose flaws and weaknesses in an engaging way, provoking thought and inviting readers to reflect on certain topics.

In this WebQuest, you will explore the history of satire, its use in literature, and the elements that have maintained its power in various media. You will analyze examples of satire, create your own satirical work, and understand how satire influences public discourse.

By the end of this WebQuest, you will be able to: 

- Analyze and understand satirical elements

- Be able to recognize satire in literature 

- Create your own satirical piece 

Task

Task at hand:

1. Research the history of satire, and learn about its effect in literature

3. Identify key satirical elements within examples

3. Create your own satirical piece in relation to a current event

Process

Step 1: Research Satire

- Summarize the claimed origins of satire

- Watch this video, and answer the following questions.

   2. Name the types of literature where satire tends to take form. 

   3. According to this video, how is satire best used? 

 

Step 2: Explore Satirical Examples

- Read the following short poems which utilize satire

- Pick one of these poems and summarize the underlying message. How was exaggeration or irony used to get the point across?

 

Step 3: Create Your Own Piece

- Pick a topic based on a cultural/societal issue or trend. 

- Brainstorm how you will criticize your topic (will you use irony, exaggeration, ect.)

- Write a short satirical poem (at least four lines) reflecting your topic. Make sure to include a creative title. 

 

Step 4: Reflect 

- Please write a brief reflection (200-300 words) on your experience with satire. Did you find it challenging to understand, analyze, and

create? Did you enjoy the examples provided? Did using satire help you connect with your chosen topic in a new way?

Your work will be evaluated using the following criteria:
