Introduction
By: Tessa Steinkraus, Southwest Minnesota State University
This WebQuest is to help first grade students understand the differences in the states of matter.
Welcome Scientists!
In today's WebQuest we will be learning about the different states of matter.
Let's Go!!
Task
1) You and a classmate will pair up
*One person will be in charge of the computer and the other will be in charge of writing down your findings in your scientist journals
2) Use the Resources below to answer these three questions together
*What is matter?
*What are the different states of matter?
*What are some real life example of each? (1 example for each state of matter)
Resources:

b)
Get those thinking caps on and go!!
Process
Now that we have some background information lets apply that to real life!
You and your partner will go around the classroom to the three different stations. Once you are there, you will read what the climate is like and decide what state of matter water would be in.
You will report these findings in your journals by copying down the graph below and filling it in.
| Station number | State of Matter |
|---|---|
|
(1) Hot Weather |
(solid, liquid, gas) |
|
(2) Neutral Weather |
(solid, liquid, gas) |
|
(3) Cold Weather |
(solid, liquid, gas) |
Once you and your partner finish going around to the stations think about example of each state of matter. Try to think of real life example for each state and write them in your journals.
Evaluation
| Criteria | Beginning (1) | Developing (2) | Exemplary (3) | Total Score |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Define Matter | Did not define matter. | Students only gave part of the definition. | Student gave the full definition of matter. | /3 |
| Identify the 3 states of matter | Only listed 1 state of matter. | Only listed 2 states of matter. | Listed all 3 states of matter. | /3 |
| Show real world examples | Shared 1/3 examples for the states. | Shared 2/3 examples for the states. | Shared 3/3 or more examples of the states. | /3 |
| Overall Participation | Did not participate |
Went around with partner but did not help. |
Helped partner and completed all activities. | /3 |
Conclusion
Now that we have finished and we know our states of matter, let's listen to a fun way to remember the states of matter.
