Introduction
- How often do you participate in a sporting event? Do you play for a sports team involved in school or recreational purposes?
- Have you ever had to explain how to play a sports game? Was it easier explaining the game through speech or demonstration?
- In this activity, you and one other person will need to choose a sports game that you will be able to explain how to play through an essay writing form and demonstrate through video.
- Both the essay and video will explain how to play a sport in thorough detail so others may be able to start their own game if they wish to do so.
Tennessee State Standards:
Demonstrates competency and/or refines activity-specific movement skills in two or more lifetime activities (outdoor pursuits, individual-performance activities, aquatics, net/wall games or target games).24 (S1.H1.L1)
Task
1. In your explanation, you need to describe the sport you have chosen in detail. Ask yourself, "If I never played this sport before, what would I need to know before participating in the game?"
Sample Questions:
- What equipment will I need to acquire to be able to play this sport? Is there a specific location I need to play at?
- How many people will I need to have in order to make a team? How many players are able to participate during the game?
- How do I play this sport? What is main objective while playing?
- Are there any pre-requisite skills that I need to practice performing before playing in an actual game? (ex. dribbling with hands or feet, kicking, shooting, throwing, catching, jumping)
- What rules do I need to know to play fairly? What terminology do I need to understand and what do they mean?
2. For the essay portion and video demonstration, answer some questions that people may generally ask (Remember: Some people may have never played the sport you have chosen) either from the sample questions above or ones you and your partner come up with.
3. Again, after you are done defining the terminology, rules, equipment, skills, and how to play the game, your audience should know everything about your sport and be able to practice playing with others.
