Consonant Extensions with ch and ph
Task
Sort the following words into their sound columns! I've given you an example for each sound.
- chimney
- chorus
- brochure
- nephew
- phrases
- chaos
- chaperone
- trophy
- spinach
- stomach
| -ch | -k | -ph | -f |
| chimney | chorus | brochure | nephew |
Process
-
Ch can make several different sounds, including /ch/ as in attach, /k/ as in echo, and /sh/ as in machine.
-
/Ch/ is the most common pronunciation for ch and, therefore, your best guess when trying to read an unfamiliar word with the pattern.
-
Ph, as in pamphlet, is a common spelling for /f/. but appears mostly in low-frequency words.
Evaluation
| -ch | -k | -sh | -f |
| chimney | chorus | brochure | nephew |
| spinach | chaos | chaperone | phrases |
| stomach | trophy | ||
Conclusion
Congratulations! Today you practiced identifying the ch and ph sounds in words! Practice saying these words to hear the different sounds these diagraphs can make!
