Sound it Out!

Introduction

We have been discussing sound all week and we are ready to put our new knowledge t the test. How much do you know about sound? How can we make sound useful?

Task

We have a big problem! The power has gone out and we need to send a message to another first grade classroom. We have been asked to stay in our classrooms. Your job is to work with your small groups to design a device that will help us communicate with another classroom.

Process

First we need to solve these small problems! Consider these questions:

1. How far is it to the other classroom?

2. What material should I use to create my communication device?

3. How do I measure something that far away? (nonstandard measurement)

Once you have figured out these three problems, you will be able to focus on the big problem.

Evaluation

When designing your device I will be looking the following criteria:

Did you come up with a plan first?

Did you work together as a group?

Does your device have the potential to work properly?

Conclusion

As you see sound can be used for many things, especially solving problems. Use this new found knowledge of sound to solve bigger world problems.
