Solar System

Introduction

                                                 Lets Travel to Space

In this assignment we will be going on a Space Mission, yes you heard that right...

                                               We are going to SPACE

In order to attend your mission, you will need to have your parents fill out and give permission to attend.

(The Slip is on the bottom of this page)

Why are we going to space? That is a great question. We will be traveling to space to find a new vacation

home. We will be traveling and exploring space in the group you will need to make sure you are paying

attending on the mission and taking notes. What do you like and dislike about the planet.

Dont know where to start first. Well, we have you covered, First, let's do our research:

What are you looking for out of a planet?

Is your planet ready for you? If not, but accommodations will you need to make this a pleasurable experience?

After you tour all the planets you decided you want to build your own dream planet, Let's get started...

Let's get started...

First, we are going to break up into small groups. Each group will go and tour a planet. During this tour, they will learn about the planet.

Whether it’s made of gas, rock, and what other element on the planet. Students will analyze a series of questions to decide if they can live on this planet and whether it’s habitual. Each group will make a Travel brochure of their planet, the brochure will consist of the plant, travel accommodation, and nearby activities. The brochure also needs to state any cons or health risks the planet might have. will teach the class about the planet they were assigned.

Using collaborative learning, students will be able to teach each other the different aspects of each planet. After, regrouping as a class, students have decided that none of the planets in the solar system are livable for humans except Earth.

Now, the students are presented with a problem.

To find a solution, the students are going to break up back into their groups and decide how they are going to terraform any existing

planet to make it habitable for human life.

There will also be a game and quiz to help ensure the standard is being met and understood.

Process

The students will travel to their planet and come up with a travel brochure trying to sell their as the other students best be home or vacation destination.

The class will watch these videos on their said planet and do the research giving the best feature and accommodations of their planet. However, the student must disclose a disclaimer on why visiting or living on this planet is risky and could possibly health risks.

So essentially the students is will be creating a pros and cons list pertaining to their planet.

Examples:

Neptune, you could say

  • far away from the sun

  • great for introverts because it's so small

  • those who like it dark

  • best ice cream in the solar system

  •  great for flying kites because it has

Disclaimer:

  •  Minus 211 degree Celsius

  • You would freeze to death

  • 80% hydrogen if inhaled can cause strokes, cardiac arrest, and heart attacks

We will now present our travels to the class! Show off your brochure and teach all about the planet.

Evaluation

                                               Welcome back to Earth

EVALUATION

Now the student has traveled to their planets and presented why their planet is the best choice.  The class will decide if any planets are actually livable for humans. The class will have the class regroup and discuss the pros and cons. The student will then decided which planet if any if suitable for living on.

Now students will take what they learned about all the planets they will now choose a planet to terraform. This will make the planet of their choice more livable.

The planet that will be the easiest and best choices would be MARS or VENUS is similar to Earth so to Terraform is MARS. If everyone wants to choose MARS that is great. If you really want a challenge to feel free to Terraform another planet but remember The class will have to provide evidence to their findings to back up their decision. Venus might be a suggestion for another planet that would be able to Terraform in to an Earth2. For this assignment some of the videos linked to assist you in the assignment will reference mainly mars, I will add a Venus video as well to give you an idea.

Before we take the quiz and make our new planet by using a terraforming method let's play a fun kahoots game

         https://create.kahoot.it/details/75addef7-411c-4a5c-9e64-22f4d20667e2

That was fun now let's take a quick Quiz

                            https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/V7VRJGB

Now that we have a good understanding of the other planets we need to regroup and decide what planet you will choose to Terraform.

Terraforming a planet

Terraforming or terraformation (literally, "Earth-shaping") is the hypothetical process of deliberately modifying the atmosphere, temperature, surface topography or ecology of a planet, moon, or other body to be similar to the environment of Earth to make it habitable by Earth-like life.

The terraforming of Mars or the terraformation of Mars is a hypothetical procedure that would ... Reasons for terraforming the planet include allaying concerns about resource use ... 2 ice sheets and contributes to the warming greenhouse effect.

                                           LET'S START TO TERRAFORM.

This video above is also to give you an idea of what it would look like if you build a planet from scratch

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FshtPsOTCP4

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fGkJZsfJq60

Now, let's begin after watching the Video we need to begin with what is most important...

First things first you need to tackle these 3 things first!

Changing the atmosphere to support Human life!

We need to breathe, STAY CONSCIOUS AND NOT FREEZE TO DEATH!!!

Let's start with Breathing

How will we breathe well for Humans we need to have an Earth-like atmosphere, Earth is made up of Hydrogen 78% Oxygen 21%

Let's say you pick MARS, here are some things you need to consider..

Terraforming Mars

Now we would need to warm and thicken the atmosphere making a Greenhouse effect, where can we get C02? (hint: is there enough co2 on mars, maybe the south poles of mars?) What is in Marshan minerals?

How about using Greenhouse gases? If we do this we will need to build billions of factories to pump out the gas. HMMM.. is this a good idea? Is this cost-effective?

Let's keep brainstorming... How about using what is surrounding the Planet? What can we borrow from space and our solar system to make this work? What about Comets and asteroids?

If we still the building blocks of Comets, How can you use the Comets minerals?

You can get creative with this but remember the planet you use to terraform needs to have all the basics for a human to live such as :

Another question to think about

The atmosphere would need what elements?

How can we get these elements naturally sourced?

How can we get oxygen?

How can we get water?

What is the greenhouse effect and why is it important?

How can we grow food?

Think outside the box brainstorm The Sky's the limit

                                                What will you chose?

Wow! Now we know all about the planets and what we need to live on a planet let's start to terraform a new planet!

Now students will take what they learned about all the planets they will now choose a planet to terraform. This will make the planet of their choice more livable. You can get creative with this but remember the planet you use to terraform needs to have all the basics for a human to live such as :

The atmosphere would need what elements?

How can we get these elements naturally sourced?

How can we get oxygen?

How can we get water?

What is the greenhouse effect and why is it important?

Remember to think outside the box use elements from space to help create                                                                  your planet.

Done forget to rename your planet

Conclusion

Conclusion

We have been very busy traveling our Solar System, making brochures, and Terraforming planets.

The class decided that it was not possible to live on another planet. The class is now working on Terraforming an existing planet to see if it might be possible and what will need to happen to make this scientifically and humanly possible.

Overall, this activity gives students an opportunity to learn about the planets in the solar system in a creative way. Students will explore the different characteristics of different planets and see if the environments on these planets are livable. Using collaborative learning, students will regroup and teach each other what they learned about the planets. Students will then have to use creativity to figure out how they can terraform a planet in order to make it livable. This activity uses hands-on activities for students to explore what they are learning.

We will get together in 2 weeks to see how Terraforming went for the class and discussion what problems arose. Would this actually work in real life?

This will lead to our next lesson in Climate control and how we can save our planet......

Teacher Introduction

Grade 6 Standard 3 object 1

This fun activity gives the students a chance to teach the class themselves. They begin by searching through the sources on the page. After they have acquired enough material, the group will come up with a presentation in order to teach the lesson themselves.

Objective 1

Describe and compare the components of the solar system.

  1. Identify the planets in the solar system by name and relative location from the Sun.

  2. Using references, compare the physical properties of the planets (e.g., size, solid or gaseous).

Why show examples: This helps the students see my high expectations for neatness and organization. I get much better project results when I start with a sample of what I would like to see when they are finished.

We have linked quizzes and even a game to help the students understand the solar system better.

We believe this is a fun and exciting way for the students to explore space and really think what it means to live on a planet and what element we need to survive on a planet.
