Now here is a review of what you have learnt…

SOLAR AND WIND ENERGY

It is often said that Jamaica is the land of wood and water, but it could just as easily have been said that Jamaica is the land of sunshine and wind.  From the coast of Negril to the hills of Portland, we get year round sunshine and cool breeze.  It may seem normal to expect these things, but Jamaica’s geography as an island is located just above the equator is what makes these possible.  This puts Jamaicans in a unique position to take advantage of the many benefits associated with the sun and wind.  Think of some of the ways you experience and use the sun and wind.  You may have thought about the sunshine drying your clothes or the fun you have in the wind hoisting your kite.  As a matter a fact, life on earth would not even exist without the heat and light from the sun.

Sunshine and wind are also important sources of renewable energy. Renewable energy is a form of energy that can be naturally replenished. As long as the sun shines and the wind blows you can harness and use them as sources of energy.  Energy from the sun is called solar energy.  Solar and wind energy are the energy sources of the future.  Presently, Jamaica gets most of its energy from non-renewable sources such as coal, oil and gas.  These energy sources are used in our homes, factories, businesses, for cooking and to power our cars.  Though reliable, these non-renewable sources have many negative effects including air pollution and contributing to climate change.  Renewable sources of energy are clean since they do not release pollutants in the air and do not have byproducts from their production that leads to climate change.

Today, renewable energy accounts for approximately 10% of our total energy needs, but in 2015, Jamaica along with many nations of the world, agreed to reduce the use of non-renewable sources of energy and transition to energy sources of the future.  Solar and wind farms are excellent examples of harnessing energy from sunshine and wind.  In the future, these farms will help to reduce the negative effects, we have experienced from non-renewable sources of energy. Energy from the sun and wind can be converted to electricity, which we can use in much the same way as we use electricity in our homes and businesses and also power our cars.

LESSON OBJECTIVES

  1. Cognitive Objective – The student should be able to recognize the difference between solar and wind energy.
  2. Affective Objective – Students should be able to participate in a class discussion and listen to newly introduced words from the video presented to them.
  3.  Psychomotor Objective – Students will be placed in groups of two and given materials to create a simple model of the wind mill and the solar panel. Each group will be given the task to make one.

The following are the lesson objectives used to create this Webquest:

  1. What are two things from the passage that life on earth would not exist without?
  2. What type of energy will people be using in the future?
  3. State what the energy from the sun and wind may be converted into?
  4. What is the energy from the sun called?
  5. State where most of the energy Jamaicans use comes from.
  6. Describe why Jamaica is often referred to as land of wood and water.
  7. State where Jamaica’s geography as an island is located?
  8. Explain the uses of the sun and wind to our society.
  9. Give the meaning of renewable energy.
  10. State the negative effects of non-renewable sources.
  11. Give the amount in percentage the amount of renewable energy needed to satisfy our energy needs.
  12. State a parish in Jamaica where u can find a wind farm.
  13. Give examples of non-renewable sources.
