Introduction
The point of this lesson is to introduce students to social studies standards covering explorers who came to Florida and the motivations for their expeditions.
Students will learn about three different explorers:
- Ponce de Leon
- Juan Garrido
- Esteban Dorantes
Task
Your task is to create a presentation about the three explorers talked about in this unit. This is a three-day WebQuest.
You will fill out a chart with information about each explorer and their individual expeditions.
Your last step will be to present all of this information and what you learned from completing the activity.
Process
DAY ONE:
Today we will cover Ponce de Leon and information regarding his expedition.
We will learn how Ponce de Leon ended up in Florida and how this is substantial for Florida's history.
You will be looking for information on the following questions:
- Did Ponce de Leon succeed in his search?
- What was Ponce de Leon originally searching for?
- How did Florida get its name?

DAY TWO:
Today we will cover Juan Garrido and information regarding his expedition.
We will learn who Juan Garrido was and why he is important to Florida's history.
You will be looking for information on the following questions:

- He is the first person to be and do what?
- What was he in search of?

DAY THREE:
Today we will cover Esteban Dorantes (or Estevanico) and information regarding his expedition.
We will learn about his background and how he ended up in Florida.
You will be looking for information on the following questions:
- Who was Esteban Dorantes and how did he get to Florida?
- What were Estevanico and three others the first to do?
- How did he die?

Conclusion
The purpose of this activity is to teach you more about the explorers and expeditions involving Florida. Hopefully, this has taught you enough information to create your presentation based off of your note chart.
You will now create and present your presentation to the class on the three explorers that we explored in this unit.
The main goal of this presentation is:
To tell us about each explorer, their lives, and their expedition.

This WebQuest has been created as a three day introduction to teach students about explorers who impacted Florida. Students will explore three different explorers through interactive websites, note-taking charts, and presentations. They will use the information to create a presentation which portrays their understandings of the information learned.
