Social Studies: How to compare and contrast the cultures and lifestyles of two countries

Introduction

Welcome to the world of cultural diversity, where you can learn about the similarities and differences between people from different countries. Culture is the way of life of a group of people, including their values, beliefs, customs, traditions, languages, arts, and more. Culture influences how people think, feel, act, and communicate. Understanding cultural differences can help you to appreciate and respect other people’s perspectives and experiences.

Task

To create a poster that compares and contrasts the cultures and lifestyles of two countries of your choice. You can choose any two countries in the world, as long as they are not your own. You will work in pairs and use the resources provided to research your chosen countries. You will then use a tool of your choice (such as Canva, Piktochart, or Google Drawings) to create a poster that includes text, images, symbols, and colors. Your poster should be informative, creative, and attractive.

Process

To complete your task, follow these steps:

  1. Form a pair with another student who is interested in the same topic as you.
  2. Choose two countries that you want to compare and contrast. You can use the Country Comparison tool to see the values for the six dimensions of culture for each country. These dimensions are: power distance, individualism, masculinity, uncertainty avoidance, long-term orientation, and indulgence.
  3. Use the resources provided to research the cultures and lifestyles of your chosen countries. Take notes on the main aspects of culture that you want to compare and contrast, such as: religion, language, food, clothing, music, sports, education, family, etc.
  4. Discuss with your partner what information you want to include in your poster and how you want to organize it.
  5. Use a tool of your choice to create your poster. Make sure it has a title that indicates the two countries you are comparing and contrasting. Use text, images, symbols, and colors to show the similarities and differences between the two cultures. You can also use captions or labels to explain your choices.
  6. Review your poster with your partner and check for accuracy, clarity, creativity, and attractiveness.
  7. Present your poster to the class.

Resources Here are some websites that you can use to research your chosen countries:

  • CIA World Factbook: A website that provides information on the history, people, government, economy, geography, communications, transportation, military, and transnational issues for 267 world entities.
  • CultureGrams: A website that offers concise, reliable, and up-to-date cultural information on over 200 countries.
  • National Geographic Kids: Countries: A website that features fun facts, photos, videos, maps, and more about different countries around the world.
