THE SOCIAL SCIENCES AS THE STUDY OF SOCIETY

Introduction

Every society is like a living puzzle, made up of people, cultures, rules, and relationships that fit together in different ways. The social sciences are the tools we use to study this puzzle. They help us understand how people interact, why communities follow certain traditions, and how societies change over time. By looking at human behavior through different perspectives—like sociology, anthropology, economics, and political science—we can uncover patterns in society and learn how to improve life for everyone. Studying social sciences is like holding up a mirror to society, helping us see both its challenges and its possibilities.

Task

Task: “Exploring Our Society”

Objective: Help students understand how social sciences study people, communities, and society.

Output: Students can make a short report, a poster, or a simple chart connecting observations to different social sciences.

Process

Instructions:

  1. Observe your community – look around your school, neighborhood, or family.
  2. Identify social patterns – notice their behaviors, rules, traditions, or roles people follow.
  3. Connect to social sciences – write which field of social science could study each pattern:
    1. Sociology → social relationships and groups
    2. Anthropology → culture and traditions
    3. Economics → how people manage resources
    4. Political Science → rules, laws, and government
  4. Reflection – answer the question: “What did you learn about your society by looking through the eyes of social sciences?”

Evaluation
Criteria Excellent (4) Good (3) Fair (2) Needs Improvement (1)
Observation of Society Noticed many examples of social behaviors, traditions, rules, and relationships Noticed several examples, but missed some key ones Noticed few examples, limited understanding Very few or no examples observed
Connection to Social Sciences Clearly identified which social science studies each observation Identified most correctly, minor mistakes Identified some correctly, several mistakes Did not connect observations to social sciences
Reflection / Insight Thoughtful reflection showing understanding of society and social sciences Good reflection, shows some understanding Basic reflection, minimal insight Reflection is unclear or missing
Presentation / Creativity Well-organized, creative, and easy to understand (chart, poster, report) Organized and understandable, some creativity Basic organization, little creativity Disorganized or hard to understand

Scoring:

  • 14–16 points → Excellent
  • 10–13 points → Good
  • 6–9 points → Fair
  • 4–5 points → Needs Improvement
Conclusion

Through this activity, students learned that the social sciences help us understand how society works. By observing their own communities, they saw patterns in behavior, culture, rules, and relationships. They also discovered how different fields—like sociology, anthropology, economics, and political science—study these patterns in different ways. This task showed that studying society is not just about reading books, but about watching, analyzing, and thinking about the world around us. Understanding these patterns helps us become more aware, responsible, and active members of our communities.

Lesson Objectives:

By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:

  1. Define social sciences and understand its role in studying society.
  2. Observe and identify social patterns, behaviors, traditions, and rules in their community.
  3. Connect observations to different fields of social sciences (sociology, anthropology, economics, political science).

Materials / Resources:

  • Open Textbook Library
  • DepEd Commons
  • Khan Academy (Social Science Section)
  • National Geographic Kids

Lesson Procedure:

1. Introduction (5–10 mins)

  • Start with a short discussion: “What makes up a society?”
  • Show examples of family, school, or local community interactions.
  • Briefly explain the social sciences and their purpose in studying society.

2. Activity / Task (20–30 mins)

  • Task: Exploring Our Society
    • Students observe their community (family, school, or neighborhood).
    • Identify social behaviors, traditions, rules, or relationships.
    • Connect each observation to a field of social science:
      • Sociology → social relationships
      • Anthropology → culture and traditions
      • Economics → resources and trade
      • Political Science → rules, laws, and governance
    • Optional: Conduct short interviews or simple surveys.

3. Reflection / Discussion (10–15 mins)

  • Ask students to share their observations.
  • Discuss how social sciences help us understand society.
  • Encourage students to think about ways to improve their community based on what they learned.

Assessment / Evaluation:

  • Use the rubric for “Exploring Our Society” (Observation, Connection to Social Sciences, Reflection, Presentation).
  • Students can present as:
    • Short report
    • Poster or chart
    • Digital presentation or slideshow

Conclusion:

  • Summarize that society is made up of people, behaviors, and traditions.
  • Highlight how social sciences help us understand patterns, relationships, and how communities work.
  • Emphasize the importance of observing, analyzing, and reflecting on our own communities.
