The word renaissance means rebirth. A number of people who lived in Italy between 1350 and 1550 believed that they had witnessed a rebirth of the ancient Greek and Roman worlds. To them, the rebirth marked a new age. Historians leater called this period the Renaissance, or Italian Renaissance--a period of European history that began in Italy and spread to the rest of Europe.
