Introduction
Many high school students are already getting a taste of the working world, and even those who haven't yet are probably looking forward to their first part-time job in college. Working part-time is a great way to start standing on our own two feet financially and get a real feel for how society works before we head out there for good.
But let’s be honest—it’s not always as great as it sounds. Too many of us end up facing some pretty tough situations, like not getting paid on time, working without a contract, or just being treated unfairly. These things don’t just happen because of "bad luck." A lot of the time, it’s because we don’t actually know what our rights are as workers.
That’s why I wanted to start this project. I want us to create a clear guide for a "Smart Part-Time Job Life." We’re going to dig into the Labor Standards Act so we know exactly what we’re entitled to, and we’ll practice how to speak up and handle unfair situations logically.
I really hope this guide can act as a shield for all of you, making sure your hard work actually pays off fairly. At the end of the day, knowing your rights is the very first step to becoming a responsible and confident member of society.
Task
Project Task: Promoting Fair Labor Rights for Part-Time Workers
Your task is to create a well-structured essay and a presentation explaining the following:
- Real-life Cases: Unfair treatment in the workplace (e.g., minimum wage violations, unpaid holiday allowances, or working without a contract) based on research or personal experiences.
- Legal Rights and Duties: Fundamental labor rights and responsibilities guaranteed under the Labor Standards Act.
- Action Plan: Practical and logical solutions to handle unfair treatment, including communication tips with employers and how to collect evidence.
- Advocacy: A personal reflection on how to foster a healthier and fairer working environment for student workers.
Activity Format:
- Group Work (Step 1–3): You will form groups of 5 students to research cases, explore legal rights, and brainstorm practical solutions together.
- Individual Assignment (Step 4): Based on the group discussions, each student must write their own individual essay that includes personal analysis and reflections.
Presentation & Sharing:
- After finishing the individual essays, each group will summarize their key findings and present them to the class.
Process
Step 1: Digging into Real-Life Cases [Group Work]
Let’s work with our team to find out what’s actually happening out there. The teacher starts the class by showing a short video of real-life part-time job cases to engage students and spark their interest in labor rights.

(To be watched) - Task: Share group members' work experiences and research recent news or legal cases together.
Step 2: Getting to Know Our Rights for Real [Group Work]
Now, let’s sit down with our team to understand the "why" behind the laws.
- Task: Dig into the Labor Standards Act as a group and clarify our rights and duties as workers.
Step 3: Brainstorming "How to Fix This" [Group Work]
It’s time to put our heads together and find some real, practical solutions.
- Task: Brainstorm together on how to communicate with employers and map out the steps for collecting evidence and reporting issues.
Step 4: Writing Down Our Thoughts [Individual Assignment]
From this step, you will work individually to write your own essay based on the discussions we’ve had in our groups.
- Task: Write a personal essay on "Unfair Treatment in Part-Time Jobs and Practical Solutions."
- Focus: Use the cases and ideas from your group brainstorming, but make sure to include your own logical analysis and personal reflections.
Step 5: Sharing Our Voice with the Class [Presentation]
Present your individually finished essay to the class and share what you’ve learned
