The Skeletal System

Introduction

The skeleton is the bony frame work which makes up the human body. Without the skeletal system we would be a shapeless sack of flesh. In this lesson we will examine the structure and function of the skeletal system.

Task

The skeletal system consists of the 206 bones found in the adult human body. The skeletal and muscular systems function together to produce movements such as sitting up straight, walking, running, jumping, and throwing. By the end of this lesson you will be able to:

Identify and expain the function of the skeleton system

Identify, explain, and provide examples for each type of bone in the body (4 types)

Identify, explain, and provide an example for 4 different types of joints in the body

Explain how nutrition affects bone growth

Label 14 basic bones of the human anatomy

Process

You're going to use the internet to investigate the Skeletal System and answer the questions below. If you are having trouble finding information please check the Teacher's Page for some helpful links. Be sure to include the website that you find your information on with each answer

Task 1:

In complete sentences, identify and explain 2 functions of the skeletal system.

Task 2:

Identify, explain, and provide an example for each type of bone in the body (4 types)

Task 3:

Identify, explain, and provide an example for 4 different types of moveable joints in the body

Task 4:

In complete sentences and in your OWN words, explain how nutrition affects bone growth

Task 5:

Label the 16 basic bones on the Bones & Muscles For Life worksheet

Evaluation

Students will be graded on the following criteria:

Task 1: 2 functions of the Skeletal System 2 points

Task 2: 4 types of bones 4 points

Task 3: 4 different types of joint 4 points

Task 4: How nutrition affects bone growth 1 points

Task 5: Labeling Diagram 14 points

Conclusion

The skeletal system is an intergal part of the human anatomy. It provides support, protection, assists muscles with movement, stores minerals, helps with production of blood cells, and can also store chemical energy. Having completed the web quest you should know that the 4 basic bones of the human anatomy are long, short, flat, and irregular bones. The pace where bones meet are called joints. There are 3 main types of moveable joints and the are: ball and socket, gliding, and hinge. You should also be able to locate and indenitfy the following bones: cranium (skull), clavicle, scapula, humerus, ulna, radius, femur, petella, fibula, fibula, tibia, sternum, ribs, vertebrae, and pelvis.
