How Can I Eat More Nutrient-Dense Foods? | American Heart Association

Hello Students!

We all know that the food we eat often provides us with essential Nutrients.

Nutrients are compounds in foods essential to life and health, providing us with energy, the building blocks for repair and growth, and substances necessary to regulate chemical processes.

There are six major nutrients: Carbohydrates (CHO), Lipids (fats), Proteins, Vitamins, Minerals, Water. Understanding the many benefits of including a variety of foods and nutrients in the diet will help you to feel and stay healthy!

In this Web Quest, students will be exploring and learning about the six basic nutrients and their functions.

Task

Six Classes of Nutrients

Your body needs the right fuel to grow, develop, and work properly. Learning about good nutrition can help you give your body what it needs and in the right amounts. There are more than forty different types of essential nutrients our bodies need and can get only from the food we consume. Nutrients supply our bodies with vitamins, minerals, fiber, and all the things our bodies need every day to stay healthy.

Good nutrition means your body gets all the nutrients, vitamins, and minerals it needs to work its best. Plan your meals and snacks to include nutrient-dense foods that are also low in calories.

Eat plenty of fruit

To get the benefit of the natural fiber in fruits, you should eat fruit whole rather than juices.

Eat plenty of vegetables

Eat a variety of colors and types of vegetables every day.

Eat plenty of whole grains

At least half of the cereals, bread, crackers, and pasta you eat should be made from whole grains.

Choose low fat or fat-free milk

These provide calcium and vitamin D to help keep your bones strong.

Choose lean meats

Lean cuts of meat and poultry have less fat and fewer calories but are still good sources of protein.

Try other sources of protein

Good nutrition is one of the most-important parts of a healthy life.

Our bodies are built of and powered by solely what we eat and drink. Food is the source of all of the energy needed Why do humans have to eat? Is it just because we get hungry? That is not all. People get energy from food. We need energy all the time, when we run, jump, sing, and even when we sleep. We create all the energy we need by eating. The structural components that make up the human body, such as muscles, organs, and bones, are also composed of the nutrients contained in food, meaning that it is. This is why eating and taking in the nutrients that provide energy and become the components of our bodily structures is essential for sustaining human life.

Nutrients are the substances found in food that drive biological activity and are essential for the human body. They are categorized as proteins, fats, carbohydrates (sugars, dietary fiber), vitamins, and minerals, and perform the following vital functions.

  1. Building all parts of the body such as muscle, bone, teeth, and blood
  2. Producing energy (power and heat)
  3. Keeping the body in good working order
