- What are singular and plural nouns?
A plural noun is a word that indicates that there is more than one person, animal place, thing, or idea. When you refer to one thing it is said to be singular but when you talk about more than one of anything, you’re using plural nouns. When you write about more than one of anything, you usually use the same word, but the ending may be different in some cases. A way of forming plural nouns is to add‘s’ and ‘es’ as mentioned in this lesson.
Plural nouns are formed in various ways by adding‘s’ to singular nouns such as girls,
tables, flowers and mongooses
Nouns ending with; ‘s, sh, ch or x’ form plurals by adding ‘es’.
E.g. boxes, bushes, stitches, glasses.
The following sentences contain singular noun examples. The bold type indicate singular nouns.
- The girl had a doll in her hand.
- My dog prefers to eat alone.
- That kangaroo never seems to tire of hopping in and out of the box.
