Shelter Project

Introduction

So you want to survive? Well, if you didn't you wouldn't be looking at this page. Preparing your shelter is a top priority and one of the things that will determine life or death. A good shelter will be able to withstand an attack by the living and the dead alike. Preparing a shelter is something we wouldn't announce to the neighborhood because as soon as the apocalypse begins, not only will you be fighting off the dead, but also all your neighbors seeking refuge. As soon as the big day comes, those who didn't prepare will want to take away from those who have. Groups of marauders will appear and civilization will be reduced to survival of the fittest. Think "Mad Max". Now, there are a couple of different structures to consider when preparing your shelter.

Design: Another critical survival skill is being able to protect yourself from the elements—whether it's cold, rain, wind or heat. Where would you build one, and what materials could you use to protect yourself from the elements?  Shelters may include basements or interior rooms with reinforced masonry construction. (The safest place to be depends on the disaster you are facing. A tornado requires shelter in an interior or basement room, whereas a flood shelter is on higher ground away from rising water.)

Introduction: How would you plan a shelter that would protect you from natural disasters, nuclear fallout, what about Zombies? This will be accomplished through creating a multimedia design, mapping, and schematic building identifications as you take on the role as Project Leader in your community. The goal is to design and present a shelter that will keep the citizens of your community safe.

Task

TASK:

Welcome students! Your mission is to learn about different types of shelters. Shelter is one of the five basic needs humans need to survive. Shelter is what keeps us safe from danger. All over the world people live in different types of shelters like houses, igloos, and huts! You will research different types of shelters. You will use this information to create a diagram of a type of shelter that you would be able to survive in during an apocalypse. You will follow the links, gather information, and design a shelter.  Keep in mind location, access to water, and security.

Process

Process

Step 1.  Use these resources to determine what type of shelter you want to choose.

Step 2: Design your shelter

Most survival experts will tell you that accessing and maintaining safe shelter is of the utmost importance in a catastrophic event. Shelter is arguably higher on the survival priority list than water, food, communication, and just about everything else.

A working group from the Zombie Research Society has developed a set of criteria for sizing up the pros and cons of any undead shelter. Named the DSM Scale, this easy system looks closely at three primary areas:

  1. Defensibility – What are the location’s natural defensive advantages? What weapons can be found or created therein? What steps can be taken to eliminate vulnerabilities?
  2. Sustainability – How much food and water is safely available? What essential supplies are stocked and ready? What threat does the surrounding environment pose both now and in time?
  3. Mobility – Are there a number of adequate escape routes for safe retreat? What transportation options does the location provide? Are the essential weapons and supplies able to be made portable?
