STEM Part 3: Wind Power and Wind turbine Basics

Task

Learn about wind power and how it is utilized in wind turbines.

Process

Directions: Do 1-3 and choose to do 5 or 6 or 7. Not 5-7

1. Take Notes over the following website's information: http://www.eia.gov/kids/energy.cfm?page=wind_home-basics

2. watch a video that demonstrates how wind turbines work and what they are. You choose an appropriate one from You Tube

3. Write a summary of the video

4.  (Optional) Write a Haiku about wind power. See for instructions:(PPt)- http://www.freeclubweb.com/powerpoints/languagearts/haiku.html

5. Find an article about Wind power or energy efficiency. Evaluate it. Tell me what you think and why. Provide evidence of any arguments you decide to make in regard to whether we should use them to power schools and more homes and businesses. Cite any sources.

6. Write a journal about your process of learning about wind turbines.

7. Create your own miniature wind turbine out of things at home: straws, tooth picks anything that make it look like a wind turbine and is inexpensive and present it to the class.

Evaluation

Creat a One Pager that illustrates:   (20 points-30 points)

  1. Knowledge of what wind power is
  2. Explains how wind turbines work
  3. Include 5 key words in the one pager
  4. Make it creative
  5. Create a short poem, cartoon, rap or song that explains the benefits of wind power.
  6. Include a picture of a wind turbine

Haiku (10 points)

Journal (20-40 points possible)

Part 1- What I learned and Do I find the subject interesting. Why or why not

Part 2- Reflection- What  I enjoyed about the video?  and why?

Part 3- If you were to have a wind turbine, what would it be for why do you think it would be important to have one there.

5-7 (20-40 points possible)

#7 is worth 40 points

#6 is worth 30 points

Video summary worth 10 points

Notes from Reading  the article 10 points

#5 is worth 20 points    

 Total assignment is worth 100 points.

You have to to 1-3 but, choose any way you like to earn 100 points.

Conclusion

Write a journal to summarize what you have learned. Journal should be atleast 10 sentences.
