Sentence Building Fun!

Introduction

We all love shapes and words!!! Today we will be having some crafting fun while learning about sentences! How exciting, we are going to be working with our best friends, cutting words that are in shapes putting them together to make silly sentences! Let's get started!

Task

Good Morning Students! Today we will be doing something so fun, we are going to be building sentences using your favorite words! All of us are going to get into groups of 2 or 3, and I'm going to pass out the materials for the day! When you find your group please sit down quietly so I can pass everything out and we can talk more about what you will be doing! Thank you and get excited!!!

Process

Students make sentences using selected words.

  1. Place the “who,” “action,” and “what” word cards face up in separate stacks. Place the function word and punctuation cards face up in rows. Provide each student with paper.

  2. Working in pairs, students select a card from each stack and place them in sentence order (i.e., “who,” “action,” and “what”).

  3. Read the words on the cards (e.g., “Sally swims beach”). Identify and insert function words and punctuation cards needed to make a meaningful sentence (e.g., at, the, “.”).

  4. Read the sentence (i.e., “Sally swims at the beach.”) and record on paper. If the sentence is silly, put a☺next to it.

  5. Continue until at least three sentences are recorded.

  6. Teacher evaluation

If you have any questions please raise your hand!!!

Evaluation

I want to make sure all of you understand what we are doing and why! So once you are finished making your three full sentences with correct grammar, and spelling, I am going to come over to each group and ask you questions about your sentences and the words you used in them! Make sure you know all your verbs and nouns. When we finish making our senesces and our feedback we will turn everything in at the turn it in box as usual.

Conclusion

We all know how important sentence structure is to our everyday life. I want you all to take out a sheet paper when you are finished and write down at least two-four sentences on why you think this activity is important, what makes sentences so important to our lives, what did you learn from this activity? When you are done and everything is put away where it came from and your desk is all cleaned up, put your sentences & your feedback paper in the Turn It in box that is located in the back of the room! I hope you all had a fun time!!! Always remember- Learning is fun!
