Introduction
Enrique's Journey is the life of a young Central American boy, and his quest to reunite with his mother who left him at the age of five years old to find work in the United States.
In this lesson students will explore the symbols associated with the novel Enrique's Journey. Students will first explore the links provided to help understand the the harsh living conditions immigrants went through just like Enrique did. Secondly students will research the different symbols associated with Enrique's Journey to know the symbols expressed throughout the novel. After they have completed the research, they will then make sure they understand the certain symbols associated with Enrique's Journey. After getting an understanding of the symbols, students will then research plot points that also happened in Enrique's Journey. After all the research they are constructed to do, they will individually create a google slideshow to represent how the symbols, plot points, and an immigrants harsh life ties altogether.
Task
Students Will:
- Explore several links to get an understanding of different immigrants and their life stories.
- Explore a link that will be provided to get an understanding of the symbols associated with the novel.
- Understand the different harsh plot points Enrique went through in each chapter.
- Connect the symbols and plot points by creating a google slideshow and showing through each chapter what different symbols and plot points Enrique went through. Ex. (In chapter ___ Enrique experienced family abandonment and explained how the beast was a symbol.)
- After connecting the symbols and plot points students will then connect what Enrique went through and other immigrants, or celebrities (that they researched) at the end of the 8th slide, which should be at least 5-8 sentences. Ex. (Enrique went through family abandonment, so did Luis Ruiz another little boy that was also trying to find his mother in the United States.)
Process
Step 1:
- Students will explore several immigrant, celebrity stories, and even an own family member if that family member has experienced something like Enrique. They will then take notes on certain and harsh plot points they have gone through. These notes should only contain what they have went through and try to start to figure how they relate to Enrique in a way.
- Here are some cites to help get you an idea on who to research, and what kind of stories to find. You may use your own resources they do not need to come from these links.
- If students decide to use a family member they need to have an immigration story, and to make sure somehow compare them to Enrique by a symbol or poor plot point.

Step 2:
- Students will now only use this link provided to take notes on the symbols associated with Enrique's Journey. Learn to memorize these symbols because students will have a quiz on them. You will only need to know those symbols provided and one other symbol that is not included in this link, but will be included in a different link.
- There are many different symbols in this novel, so I suggest to take notes on these, but also use your books to get more information on them.

Step 3:
- Students will then use this specific link to understand the poor plot points that happened throughout the novel. Take notes!! Students need to understand what poor plot points happened from the prologue to chapter eight in the novel. This specific link below will have the one extra symbol you will need to learn and know. After seeing that one specific symbol keep going until you find a theme wheel, which will explain the poor plot points/themes within each chapter.

- After using that link and taking notes on the poor plot points students are more than welcome to using other sites to help find more information to go above and beyond, but the students will find everything they need to know in these specific links.

Step 4:
- After students have researched the symbols, plot points, and an immigrants story they will start to construct their google slideshow.
- There will need to be a total of eight slides. Starting from the prologue to chapter seven. I do not want a title! Students will present this to the class.
- Each slide will contain how the symbols and poor plot points connect with each other just within that specific chapter. So that means do your research and know what happens specifically in each chapter!
- Check back on the task page to see an example I provided.
Step 5:
- After creating the eight slides, and explaining the harsh plot points and how the symbols connect students will then add their last piece of information to their project!
- On the very eighth slide students will contemplate on how Enrique and their immigrant they researched are alike. It should be a paragraph long (5-8 sentences). They should include the similar events that happened with their immigrant and Enrique himself.
- An example if provided in the task page.
Step 6:
- I will grade this project by every slide students do correctly!
- Have fun and take your time! Make it as unique as you can.

Slide 8 |
Establishes in an organizing, creative, and clear way of understanding how the symbols and plot points connect within chapter seven. Also goes above and beyond to include the paragraph on how their immigrant connects with Enrique in a creative and unique way. |
Establishes in a fair way of understanding the symbols and plot point, but does not clearly connect them within chapter seven. The paragraph does not contain how the immigrant and Enrique connect, but does include information about them. |
Establishes a poor understanding of the symbols and plot points altogether within chapter seven and organization is seriously flawed. There also is a truly poor understanding of how the immigrant connects with Enrique. |
Conclusion
Students have now explored and learned the symbols associated with Enrique's Journey and connected them with the poor plot points he has experienced! After learning the symbols which was the main topic to seek, students them tied together an immigrant who could have been a family member, celebrity, or even a random person and connected them together and explained the harsh plot points they both experienced within their life.
This assignment has been a journey through literature, symbols, plot points, and other immigrants rough lives. I hope this was an eye opener to realize how many immigrants go through the same things within a daily basis.
