School Uniforms Vs. Dress Codes

Introduction

To tie into a "Social Book Clubs" kick off, we recently read the book A Hundred Dresses.  The story was about a girl who wore the same blue dress to school each day, and was made fun of for it. Her response is always that she has 100 dresses, but likes this one best.  At the end you are left to assume she actually has 100 dresses, because she draws all 100 of them for a school art contest.   This was an important social issue about judging a person by the clothes they wear.

Task

To research the pros and cons of school uniform policies and to support your opinion with researched facts and examples from the text in a class debate.

    • Debate Prompt:   Would Wanda in The Hundred Dresses have benefitted from a school uniform policy?
      • Defend your stance using text based evidence from both nonfiction research articles and websites and from the literary novel The Hundred Dresses.
      • Prepare to argue your side by taking bulleted notes on your note-catcher while researching in your small groups.

Process

Below is a list of websites you may explore to find additional information to support your opinion.  Yes there should be a school uniforms policy.  No there shouldn't be.  Be sure to note which website you take your ideas from on your note-catcher.

Evaluation

Now look at your note-catcher and list of sources.  I hope you included from the articles and from the websites for variety.

Can you write some questions that you might ask the other side to think about during the debate?

What evidence do you remember from The Hundred Dresses that also supports whether or not Wanda would have benefitted from a school uniform policy?  Jot that down on the back of your paper.

Conclusion

Do you have at least 5 examples from text to support your argument?

Have you thought of a few questions to ask the other side?

Try counterclaims if you have time! What might the other side ask YOU?  How might you respond?
