You have entered the “real world” but you are finding that math is still everywhere! It’s your team’s job to determine the best way to make one of these predictions mathematically using scatter plots and bring these real world examples into the classroom using your knowledge of linear equations and slope.
Task
The Task
Whether you want to be a sports manager, chef, athlete, run a movie production company, be an environmentalist or many other professions, you will often come across two items that need to analyzed. One of the best ways to do this is through a scatterplot and line of best fit.
In a group of 3, you will…
-
1. learn what a scatter plot is and how to make a google sheet of your information.
-
2. work together to create a scatter plot based upon your selected profession and make reasonable predictions using your line of best fit with at least 15 pieces of information on the table and scatter plot. You will then create a line of best fit and write the equation of the line.

3. with your team present your findings using your Google Sheet page.
Through the use of mathematics, you will accurately use your scatterplot to predict the future!

Process
Once you have been assigned a group of three students, you will decide which group member will take ownership of what role. Each member will independently do their part and when all put together, it will create a finished product of a scatter plot and then create a slide on a Google Sheet shared document. The roles are as follows:
Everyone will need to read this first: what is a scatter plot?
Tech Maker: this person will be creating the google sheet with the information gathered from the researcher and writer. Watch here on how to make the scatter plot on google sheets.
Researcher: This person looks up the information for the scatter plots.
Data Collector: This person writes the information down while having the researcher look it up.
Professions to choose from: (note, you will not be making slide #4, only slide #1 with your data).

Each team member will receive their own grade. You will be graded both individually as well as how you work as a team.

Congratulations – You are a Scatterplot Master!
You now should have a clear understanding of scatterplots and be able to create a scatter plot on Google Sheets from any two variables. As a scatterplot analysist, you know how to determine the type of correlation, create a line of best fit, determine it’s equation and make reasonable predictions about your data.
