Saving Palawan — A Call to Action for Environmental Conservation

Introduction

Subject: Science | Grade Level: Grade 10 | Output: Poster/Infographic (Group of 3–5)

Imagine a place so breathtaking that it has been called the “Last Frontier” of the Philippines — Palawan. Its crystal-clear waters, diverse wildlife, and lush forests make it one of the most biodiverse regions in the world. But this paradise is under threat. Deforestation, illegal fishing, pollution, and climate change are slowly destroying what took millions of years to build.

You and your group are Environmental Advocates tasked by a fictional NGO called GreenPH to raise awareness about the environmental challenges facing Palawan. Your mission is to research, analyze, and create a powerful informational poster or infographic that will educate your community about these threats and what can be done to stop them.

Task

As a group of 3–5 members, you will:

    1.    Research the biodiversity and environmental issues of Palawan

    2.    Identify at least 3 major environmental threats facing the region

    3.    Propose at least 3 conservation solutions or actions

    4.    Create a poster or infographic (digital or hand-drawn) that presents your findings in a clear, creative, and compelling way.

Your final output should be visually engaging, factually accurate, and persuasive enough to inspire others to take action.

Process

Step 1 — Assign Roles

Divide the work among your group members:

    ∙    Researcher (biodiversity facts)

    ∙    Researcher (environmental threats)

    ∙    Solution Finder (conservation efforts)

    ∙    Designer (layout and visuals)

∙    Editor/Presenter (proofreading and final presentation)

Step 2 — Research

Use the resources provided below to gather information on: Palawan’s unique ecosystems and wildlife, current environmental threats, and existing conservation programs.

Step 3 — Organize Your Data

Fill in a graphic organizer with: key facts, threats identified, and proposed solutions.

Step 4 — Design Your Poster/Infographic

Use Canva, Google Slides, or any art materials. Include: a title, visuals/icons, key facts, threats, solutions, and a call-to-action message.

Step 5 — Present

Each group will do a 3–5 minute presentation explaining their infographic to the class.

Conclusion

Through this WebQuest, you have explored the beauty and the fragility of Palawan’s environment. You have learned that environmental conservation is not just the job of scientists or the government — it is everyone’s responsibility, including yours.

As young advocates, the infographic you created is a small but powerful step toward change. Reflect on these questions as a group:

∙    What surprised you the most about Palawan’s environmental situation?

∙    What is one action you personally commit to doing for the environment?

∙    How can awareness, like the poster you made, contribute to real change?

“The Earth does not belong to us — we belong to the Earth.”
