SAVING OUR OCEANS

Introduction

The oceans cover more than 70% of the Earth and provide food, oxygen, transportation, and livelihoods for millions of people. However, human activities such as plastic pollution, overfishing, and oil spills are threatening marine life and ocean ecosystems. In this WebQuest, students will become “Ocean Protectors” and investigate the causes and effects of ocean pollution and discover ways to help save our oceans.

Task

You are part of an environmental team tasked to create an awareness campaign about protecting the oceans. Your group will:

  • Research major causes of ocean pollution
  • Identify the effects of pollution on marine life and humans
  • Explore solutions to reduce ocean pollutionCreate an advocacy output such as:
    • Poster
    • Infographic
    • PowerPoint presentation
    • Video campaign
    • Slogan or poem

At the end of the activity, your group will present your advocacy campaign to the class.

Process

Step 1: Learn About Ocean Pollution

Research the following:

  • What is ocean pollution?
  • What are the common types of ocean pollution?
  • How does pollution affect marine ecosystems?

Step 2: Investigate the Causes

Focus on these major causes:

  • Plastic waste
  • Oil spills
  • Chemical dumping
  • Overfishing
  • Sewage disposal

Step 3: Discover the Effects

Find out how pollution affects:

  • Fish and marine animals
  • Coral reefs
  • Human health
  • Climate and biodiversity

Step 4: Explore Solutions

  • Research possible solutions such as:
  • Recycling and waste segregation
  • Coastal clean-up drives
  • Reducing single-use plastics
  • Marine protected areas
  • Environmental laws and policies

Step 5: Create Your Advocacy Campaign

  • Using your gathered information, create a campaign material encouraging people to protect the oceans.
