Saving Our Community: A climate Action Challenge

Introduction

Imagine that your community has experienced stronger typhoons, heavier flooding, extreme heat, and changing weather patterns over the past few years. Many people are asking, "Why is this happening, and what can we do to help?"
 

Your local government has launched a Climate Action Challenge and is looking for young environmental consultants to develop practical solutions. You and your classmates have been chosen for this important mission.
 

In this WebQuest, you will investigate the causes and effects of climate change using reliable online resources. You will work collaboratively to analyze information, think critically, and propose realistic actions that can help protect your school and community. By the end of this activity, you will present your ideas and inspire others to become responsible stewards of the environment.

Task

As members of the Climate Action Team, your mission is to develop a community action plan that promotes environmental awareness and sustainability.

Working groups of four, you will:

  • Explain the meaning of climate change.
  • Identify at least five causes of climate change.
  • Describe at least five effects of climate change on people and the environment.
  • Investigate how climate change affects the Philippines and your local community.
  • Recommend five practical actions that students, families, schools, and communities can do to reduce its effects.
  • Create a PowerPoint presentation, Canva infographic, digital poster, or short awareness video presenting your findings.
  • Present your Climate Action Plan to the class.

Process

 Step 1: Form Your Team

Form a group of four students and assign the following roles:

  • Researcher
  • Recorder
  • Designer
  • Presenter

Step 2: Explore the Resources
Visit the websites listed in the resources section and gather accurate information about climate change.

Step 3: Answer the Guide Questions
Discuss the following questions with your group:

  • What is climate change
  • What are its major causes
  • How does climate change affect people, animals, and the environment?
  • How is the Philippines affected by climate change?
  • What actions can individuals and communities take to reduce its effects?
     

Step 4: Organize Your Finding
Summarize your research and identify the most important information.

Step 5: Create Your Output
Using PowerPoint, Canva, Google Slides, or another digital tool, create an engaging presentation or infographic that includes:

  • Definition of climate change
  • Causes
  • Effects
  • Local examples
  • Practical solutions
  • A call to action

Step 6: Present Your Work
Present your Climate Acton Plan to the class in 5-7 minutes. Every group member should participate.

Step 7: Reflection
After the presentation, write a short reflection answering this question:

"What is one action I will personally take to help protect the environment?"





 

 

Evaluation

Your group's performance will be evaluated using the following criteria:

  • Content Accuracy (30%) - Information is accurate, complete, and supported by reliable online sources.
  • Critical Thinking (20%) - Demonstrate a clear understanding of climate change and presents realistic and practical solutions.
  • Creativity and Organization (20%) -  The presentation is visually appealing, well-organized, and effectively communicates the group's ideas.
  • Teamwork and Collaboration (15%) - All group members actively participate, cooperate, and contribute to the completion of the task.

  • Presentation Skills (15%) - The group presents confidently, communicates ideas clearly, and responds appropriately to questions.

    Performance Levels

  • Excellent ( 90-100): Demonstrates outstanding understanding, creativity, teamwork, and presentation skills.
  • Very Good (80-89): Shows good understanding and collaboration with only minor areas for improvement.
  • Satisfactory (75-79): Meets the expected learning outcomes but needs improvement in some areas.
  • Needs Improvement (Below 75): Demonstrates limited understanding and requires additional support and revision.
