Saving the Environment: Taking Action Against Climate Change

Introduction

Have you ever thought about how your daily actions affect the planet? Climate change is a growing global problem that impacts our environment, health, and future.

As students, you have the power to make a difference!
In this WebQuest, you will become young environmental advocates. You will explore the causes and effects of climate change and discover simple yet powerful ways to help protect the Earth.

Task

Climate change refers to the long-term changes in the Earth’s temperature, weather patterns, and climate systems. While the Earth’s climate has changed naturally over time, today’s climate change is happening much faster mainly because of human activities.

The primary cause of climate change is the increase of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, such as carbon dioxide (CO₂), methane (CH₄), and nitrous oxide (N₂O). These gases trap heat from the sun, creating a “greenhouse effect” that warms the planet. Human activities like burning fossil fuels (coal, oil, and gas), cutting down trees (deforestation), and industrial processes release large amounts of these gases into the air.

As a result, the Earth’s temperature rises, leading to global warming. This causes various environmental changes, including:

More frequent and stronger typhoons and storms
Rising sea levels due to melting ice
Droughts and heatwaves
Loss of biodiversity and habitats

Climate change does not only affect the environment—it also impacts human health, food supply, and livelihoods.

In simple terms, climate change is the warming of the Earth caused mostly by human activities, leading to serious changes in weather and the environment.

Here are some solution we can do:
1. Save Energy at Home and School
Turn off lights, fans, and gadgets when not in use
Use natural light during the day
This reduces electricity use and lowers carbon emissions.

2. Practice the 3Rs (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle)
Reduce waste by avoiding single-use plastics
Reuse materials like paper, bottles, and bags
Recycle properly
This helps lessen pollution and waste in landfills.

3. Use Eco-Friendly Transportation
Walk, bike, or use public transportation instead of private vehicles
This reduces air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions.

4. Plant Trees and Take Care of Nature
Join tree-planting activities
Avoid damaging plants and green spaces
Trees absorb carbon dioxide and help clean the air.

5. Conserve Water
Turn off the faucet when not in use
Fix leaks and avoid wasting water
Saving water also saves the energy used to process and deliver it.

6. Spread Awareness
Share what you learn with classmates, family, and friends
Use social media to promote environmental care
Awareness encourages more people to take action.

Process

Follow these steps carefully:

Step 1: Understand Climate Change
Research what climate change is and why it happens.

Step 2: Identify Causes and Effects
List down the main causes (e.g., pollution, deforestation) and effects (e.g., rising temperatures, disasters).

Step 3: Explore Solutions
Find at least 5 ways students can help, such as saving energy, recycling, or planting trees.

Step 4: Organize Your Ideas
Create an outline before making your final output.

Step 5: Create Your Presentation
Use any of the following:
PowerPoint
Canva
Hand-made poster
Make sure your work is neat, creative, and informative.

Step 6: Share Your Work
Present your output in class and explain your ideas clearly.
