Our Class Vegetable Garden

Introduction

Our class will be growing a garden!

We have been given the opportunity to grow our own class garden and we will be going to the feed mill to get our supplies.

The class will be split into three groups.

One group will be growing strawberries.

The second group will be growing tomatoes.

The third group will be growing squash.

Task

1. Before we can begin our garden we must have all of our supplies. Your group must research what is required to grow your vegetable garden. You must take into consideration:

Will your garden will be on the ground or will it be raised?

How will you break the ground?

If your garden is on the ground will it be protected from critters?

What do you need to plant your seeds?

2. Next you must determine the dimensions of your garden. You are getting ten plants so you must find out how far apart you must plant your seeds. Once you have this information you must draw out the diminsions on your poster. Design your garden including the diminsions.

3. Lastly you must learn about your vegetable. You should know:

What time of year it is planted.

How often it needs to be watered.

How much sun it gets.

What bugs are a threat to your vegetable.

How much fertilizer it needs.

How often should you pick your vegetables.

Process

You can use the following websites to find the answers to your task. Write all the information down and make a final draft of your answers and garden design on a poster board to present to the class.

This webquest is designed to encourage students to be resourceful and knowledgable of the earth and its ability. Students learn to create a garden, manage it and maintain it. It also sparks an interest in growing your own food and creating a product that you can be proud of. Hopefully this is the begining of a passion for gardening for the students.
