From Samples to Songs WebQuest

Introduction

You are a producer working with a new music artist. This artist wants to incorporate a sample into a new song. You want to play three songs for this artist that successfully incorporate samples into their music. The artists has some ideas, but they are not making sense. You know that you can provide three really good examples of sampled songs. Get to work. Dig in those crates for those perfect three songs.

Task

In this WebQuest you will find three songs that have sampled other music. This means that a song you find will have a portion of another song in it. It can just be a breakbeat, it can be a portion of a melody or even an entire section of a song. After finding your three songs that use samples, you will find the original song that was sampled. You will discover and learn about the artists that created the original, sampled song.

Process

Step #1: In your group you will find three songs that use samples. These songs can be of any style or genre. You can search google for songs that use samples. You can search for hip-hop songs with samples. You can search for famous songs that have been sampled. You can even search for famous breakbeats. Find these songs on YouTube. Next find the original song that has been sampled.  The following links give examples.

DJ Cool Herc (This song uses a sample)

Incredible Bongo Band (The original song that is sampled)

More samples are provided under the "Credits" tab.

Step #2:  Each member of the group is responsible for finding one sample and one original song. You must provide the song name, performer's name, and year the song was released for both songs.  You will put the original song on one slide and the sampled song on a second slide.

Step #3: The group as a whole will then choose 2 songs - 1 will be the original and 1 will be your sample.  You will provide links to both of these songs so we can imagine your creation.  You must list at least (3) reasons why you chose these songs and why they will combine to make an awesome new contribution to modern music.  You must also provide the song name, performer's name, and year of the song's release for both songs.

Step #4: Assemble all of your information in a Google Slides presentation. Add YouTube links to all three of your songs and also the three sample songs. Include your background information about the sample. Add pictures of the artists. Find album covers and add those to your presentation. Be creative and have fun.

Your presentation should follow these requirements:

First Slide - Name of your production company (ex. NikMik Productions, Inc) and individual group members.

* Each member will create (2) slides: 1 for your original and 1 for your sample

Final 3 slides should be:  "New" original song, "New" sample song, Reasons for choosing these songs.

You must share your presentation with Mrs. Onufer to receive a grade.

Be sure to refer to the rubric under the "Evaluation" tab to guide your process.

Conclusion

Congratulations, you have completed this WebQuest. Hopefully you have noticed that artists get inspiration from other artists. In this case, it is actually music created by another artist. Historical events often shape the arts, and music is no exception. Did you notice that historical events effected the song creations? In searching for samples, you may have noticed that there are a few classic samples that are used quite often. Is this surprising? Another aspect of samples that is interesting is that many times they are not from the same genre as the new music. Again, musicians are looking for inspiration and are not concerned about where it comes from. This tells us that many musicians are listening to many types of music, not just the style that they perform.

Hopefully you had fun, heard some new music and learned something about samples and music history.
