LAZYVILLE learns to get ACTIVE!

Introduction

Sports are a very important part of the United States culture.  Athletes train and dedicate many hours of their time to become the best of their sport.  This causes millions of people to become interested in sports and they desire to be part of the games in someway.  Our country spends billions of dollars on player's salaries, tickets and sales of other sports related items.  How would our country function without sports? Do sports serve a significant purpose in our society?  Are sports worth having or should we invest our time and money elsewhere?

Task

You have recently moved to a new country, Lazyville!  Lazyville is a country full of couch potatoes who have no knowledge of sports.  The people of Lazyville believe sports cause more problems in other countries and do not want to allow sports to mainstream into their culture.  Your job is to teach Lazyville how to play the game/sport your P.E. teacher has assigned and explain how it is beneficial.

On your journey, you must bring one professional player of the assigned game/sport with you to assist in demonstrations.  You must provide Lazyville with biographical information about your chosen athlete since they will not know who he or she is.

After you teach and demonstrate the assigned topic to the people of Lazyville, they want to know what the benefits are of playing this game/sport. Please list all benefits (physical, emotional, social, etc.).

Your final job will be to create a tri-fold brochure of the game/sport you have taught Lazyville.  You must provide the people a summary of all of the information you have learned, advertising your game/sport!

This lesson has the potential to be a very fun and exciting learning experience for our students.  It keeps them actively engaged exploring new information while incorporating other subjects such as computers, typing and language arts.

It is the teacher's duty to be well educated and knowledgeable in all topics taught to students during PE class.  Student's must be able to believe and trust that you are well educated on what you are teaching.  Teachers that take time to research sports are able to teach the topic well.  Also, experience playing the sports being taught is very beneficial to the teacher.  Never settle and be satisfied, we all can become better for the benefit of our students!
