Introduction
Why is order important?
If we do not have order, what will happen?
We are going to learn how to put things in order to solve expressions.
Description: This WebQuest introduces order of operation. Students will learn how to simply expressions using the order of operations property. Students will also use properties and operations to determine if two expressions simplifies into each other.
Grade Level: 9-12
Content Standard: 1.1 Students use properties of numbers to demonstrate whether assertions are true or false.
25.1 Students use properties of numbers to construct simple, valid arguements (direct and indirect)
for, or formulate counterexamples to, claimed assertions.
Curriculum: Math
Keywords: oder of operation, terms, like terms, coefficient
Author: Roxie Findsen
Task
This webquest will teach you:
1. The defintion of order of operation
2. How to simply expressions
Process
You already learned about the properties of addition and multiplication. If you are still unsure you can go to http://www.purplemath.com/modules/numbprop.htm
Today, we are going to use the properties with a new set of properties in order to simply expressions through Order of Operation.
Order of Operation Properties:
1st: Perform operations inside grouping symbols
2nd: Evaluate powers
3rd: Perform multiplication and division from left to right
4th: Perform addition and subtraction from left to right
What is it important to have order in mathematics?

Order of Operation Practice
Directions: calculate the following problems using order of operation.
1. 15 – 2 x 5 + 3 2. (3 x 4) 2
3. 7 + 3 x 29 – 4 2 4. 5[4 + (8 – 2)]
5. 10÷2 + 7 x 32 6. 2(3+ 6÷2)2
Evaluation
Click on the link below. You will be playing an interactive game, in which you have to pass seven levels demonstrating your understanding of order of operation in order to win. You are to play until you have successfully won the game.
Conclusion
You began this WebQuest wondering why is it important to have order. Without order there can be choas or incorrect answers. With practice you were able to deomstrate your level of understanding of order of operation.
