Responsible Consumer: Smart Budgeting and Shopping.

Introduction

It is all too common for us to go over budget when vising the grocery store. We accidentally buy more than what we need or sometimes even forget to buy what we came for. 

In this Webquest, you will become a responsible consumer. By comparing products, prioritizing needs over wants, analyzing value and evaluating your purchases. 

Task

For this webquest, students are given scenarios where they will have to demonstrate wise buying decisions. 

Each group will be given a purchasing scenario and budget manage. After which each group must: 

- Show how they prioritized needs and wants.

-Compare product prices, quality, warranties and reviews. 

- Staying on budget while deciding purchases that hold value.

Pen and Paper 

Calculator 

 

They will give a presentation on the following process. Once the activity is complete, students are to reflect or give insight to their experiences and relating it to consumer rights and responsibilities. 

Process

STEP 1: Explore and read about ways to be a responsible consumer.

Step 2: Student will be divided into groups of 4. Each group will be given a scenario and budget. 

 

Group 1: Buying school supplies for a 3D recreation of house project. 

Budget: ₱300

 

Group 2: Planning a healthy family meal for the week. 

Budget: ₱5,000

 

Group 3: Purchasing a Laptop for school purposes. 

Budget: ₱14,000

 

Group 4: Buying a new electric stove. 

Budget: ₱1,300

 

Step 3: Each group will be then create a shopping list based on their assigned scenario. 

 

The shopping list must also include: 

- Needs 

- Wants 

- Alternative Products/Brands 

- Written warranties 

 

Step 4: After the shopping list is finalized, students must evaluate quality, value and reviews for the products they have put in their shopping lists. 

 

Step 5: When they have finalized which of the following products they consider buying, they must calculate how much they have spent and saved. 

 

They must also be ready to answer the following questions:

   > What they bought

   > Why they chose those products

   > How they saved money

   > Consumer rights/responsibilities involved

 

Step 6: The students must present their process and results in a presentation. 

 

Step 7: Lastly, Students will write an individual reflection or learning insight that answers the following guide questions:

 

1. Which product offered the best value?

2. Did advertising and packaging influence your decision?

3. How can consumers avoid being misled?

4. Why is budgeting important?
