research on cells by Khole and Amaya Mejia
Introduction
Cells are very important to living beings. Different cells have different uses in living beings and are being researched almost every day. For example, how frog eggs are being used in research with human cells, and how fat cells may be able to help people with spinal cord injuries. Besides frog eggs and fat cells, the reason the stomach doesn't digest itself is because it is lined with epithelial cells and those cells produce mucus. This forms a barrier that is in between the stomach and its contents. This WebQuest will help you understand the cell world.
Task
In this WebQuest we will be talking about the roles that different cells play in human bodies and the research involving different cell types. Fat cells, Schwann cells, Human cells, and Epithelial cells and how scientists study diverse scientific topics.
Process
1. What do researchers think is one cause of memory impairment related to growing older? What does new research show that may be able to help reverse this process?
-Hormones and proteins that repair brain cells and neural growth also decline with age. Older people often experience decreased blood flow to the brain, which can impair memory and lead to changes in cognitive skills.
2. How might fat cells be able to help people with spinal cord injuries?
-Transplanting cells into SCI rats significantly promoted the recovery of their hind limb function. These studies demonstrate the ability to obtain stem cells from a patient's own fat that can help repair injury to the spinal cord.
3.How are frog eggs being used in research involving human cells?
-It is a type of damage that is very difficult to study. To do so, the researchers prepared protein extracts from frog eggs, which recapitulates the repair of the lesion in a test tube. These extracts contain the same proteins that are found in human cells, and therefore represent a good model to study these lesions.
4. What are Schwann cells? How are they affected in multiple sclerosis patients?
-Schwann cells surrounding neurons protect the degeneration of nerves by blocking thrombin, a blood-clotting protein that can also damage nerves, according to a new study. These findings may aid in the further understanding of genetic and molecular mechanisms behind conditions such as multiple indurations.
5. What role do cells play in preventing the stomach from digesting itself?
-How does the stomach avoid digesting itself? The stomach does not digest itself because it is lined with epithelial cells, which produce mucus. This forms a barrier between the lining of the stomach and the contents.
Evaluation
Conclusion
Different cells play different rolls in living things and are researched about every day. For example how ,cell roles prevent the stomach from digesting itself, Schwann cells are affected in multiple sclerosis, how fat cells may be able to help people with spinal cord injuries, and how frog eggs are being used in research involving human cells. Cells play many roles in our bodies that help us survive
