Introduction
Introduction:
- Students will be shown a model depicting a park but filthy. A picture of a disfigured Earth will be projected as well.
- Students are to take a few minutes to observe the model and the picture. (Brainstorming)
- Students will be paired up with an elbow partner (Think-Pair-Share) and they are to share their ideas about the visuals shown.
- Teacher will elicit from randomly selected students.
- Short class discussion of the model and picture.
Possible Questions asked to students:
- What is wrong with the park?
- Why is the earth sad?
- What is pollution?
- What type of pollution is this?
- How can we make the earth smile again?
Task
Previous Knowledge:
Students have experienced and are familiar with different forms of pollution in their environment.
Objectives:
1. Through the use of questioning and visual aids, students will be able to differentiate between the terms reduce, reuse and recycle. (Cognitive)
2. Haven been given recycled materials and other manipulatives, students will be able to create new projects/products from them. (Psychomotor)
3. Students will be able to appreciate and realize that to have a fertile environment they need to make certain changes to decrease and ultimately eliminate the dangers caused to earth by humans. (Affective)
Process
Concepts:
Land pollution occurs when waste is not disposed of properly. Human actions have also caused many large areas of land to lose or reduce their capacity to support life forms and ecosystems.
Like many other challenges, the best way to solve problems is to understand it. This means learning about it (like what you are doing now) is the greatest step forward.
Here are a few other tips on how you can help reduce land pollution:
- People should be educated and made aware about the harmful effects of littering. Discuss with friends and family and talk about it.
- Reuse any items that you can. Items like clothing, bottles, wrapping paper and shopping bags can be used over and over again, rather than buying new things.
- The greatest prevention to land pollution is in the three ‘R's’ … Reduce Waste, Re-use things and Recycle things.
- Personal litter should be disposed properly. We can separate household waste at home for recycling. More than half of our household waste could be recycled or re-used but once it is mixed up, it becomes more difficult to separate different components for recycling. This is also true for waste we make at school or hospitals.
- Buy biodegradable products.
- Store all liquid chemicals and waste in spill-proof containers.
- Eat organic foods that are grown without pesticides. Look out for fertilizer or pesticide free products when you go to the market.
- Don’t use pesticides if you can.
- Use a drip tray to collect engine oil.
- Buy products that have little packaging.
- Don’t dump motor oil on the ground.
- Governments can also ensure that there are incentives for people to recycle and re-use things.
Skills: Students will observe and communicate how we as citizens can reduce waste in our environment
Attitudes/Values: Students will develop awareness of better ways to manage waste, develop civic pride, and work cooperatively in groups.
Evaluation
Development:
- A poster depicting the life span of different house hold materials will be shared with the class. Materials such as card board, plastic bags, bottles, tin-can etc.
- Elicit from students their views on what was shared with them. Questions will be attached to the poster which will be randomly distributed to students to respond to.
- Three different stations will be organized in the class.
- (i) Reduce:
-Information posters on what is reduce. Other facts about Reducing will be posted in that station too.
-Activity sheets, scenarios
-Materials will be displayed
- Reuse:
- Information posters on what is reduce. Other facts about Reducing will be posted in that station too.
-Activity sheets , Scenarios
-Materials will be displayed
- Recycle:
- Information posters on what is reduce. Other facts about Reducing will be posted in that station too.
-Activity sheets , Scenarios
-Materials will be displayed
- Students will be divided into three groups using colored cards. Each group will be positioned in one of the labeled stations.
- Upon hearing a clapping/tapping sound, they are to move to another station in a clock wise direction.
- Once in the stations they are to read, discuss and analyze the information that is there.
- Instructions on what they are to do will be posted in the stations as well.
- Students are to work collaboratively to finalize the work given.
- On the sound of the last signal students are to return to their original stations. They are to discuss and finalize their work.
- Teacher will call out on groups and members to share what they have discussed and gathered from the different stations.
- Poster divided in three different columns will be placed in front of the class, as students are sharing the information will be recorded on the board.
- Revision of the different activities from the stations will also be carried out.
Conclusion
Conclusion:
- Students will be placed in groups of four using the “Mingle Mingle Dance”.
- Once in their groups different recycled materials will be given to them.
- Group members are to work together to create a new item (product) from the materials given. Students are to specifically create a lamp.
- An example of a lamp made from recycled materials will be shown to students to give them an idea as to what is expected of them to do.
- Groups will be called on to share their newly created items and how they went about doing it.
Extended Activity:
-Students will be given a web quest link on reducing, reusing and recycling to log into. Information, activities and other forms of teaching the concept will be presented to students in that website.
