Recite and apply multiplication facts up to 12x12

Introduction

In this lesson, we will work with multiplication tables for numbers 1 through 12 and ways to remember them. This lesson will answer:

  • What is the relationship of this to that?
  • Is there a pattern to remember?
  • Is there a general rule?
  • Where else would this strategy be useful?
  • How does this relate to a real-life situation
Task

Students will create a verbal presentation for a number from 1-12. They must remember the multiples of their number up to 12 times. Understand, analyze, and share with the class the easiest way to remember the multiples of the number up to 12 times. Give one example of how this knowledge can apply to a real-life situation. Answer a question of a random multiple of your number from the teacher.

Process

Each student will be responsible for a random number from 1 to 12. You will present the number to the class and recite multiples of each number up to the 12th multiple in order. Next, you will describe a pattern for remembering the multiples of your number (eg. For number 10, you increase the number in the tens place by 1). Once finished, you will be asked a random multiple of your number that you must answer in 5 seconds (eg. What is the 5th multiple of 6?).

Explain how knowing the multiplication table and being able to count by your number will help in a real-life situation.

Evaluation

This assignment is worth 5 points.

1 point - Presentation - Loudness, voice clarity, classroom eye contact.

2 Points - Reciting & remembering the multiples correctly.

2 points - Explanation of pattern recognition and real-life situation use.

Conclusion

To conclude, multiplication tables are not just necessary in elementary math, but in real-life. Knowing your multiples of 1's, 2's, 5's and 10'a alone can you help you during cash transactions when it's time tender your money and receive change! It is also an aid to solving math problems quickly. Once you understand, remember, and analyze the patterns and relationships between these numbers, the multiplication table for numbers 1-12 will be a breeze.
