Increasing Rigor: A Reflection of Professional Development 2013-14

Introduction

During this school year we have examined new and changing definitions of rigor, how rigor is being calibrated, and sources of questions that reflect the rigor expected to be found in upcoming assessments.  As part of this training, each teacher has been asked to select one lesson, reflect upon its rigor, and increase the rigor using one of the many resources provided.

Task

Your task is to upgrade a lesson, assignment, test, writing prompt, project, etc. as to increase rigor.  Using one of several rubrics, you should reflect on your work and rate it.  Next, you will share your work with a colleague and discuss the elements and the extent to which the work truly increases rigor for students.

Process

Step One:  Select one lesson, assignment, writing prompt, test, project, or performance task that you have used this year and increase its rigor.

Step Two:  Select one rubric that best fits the work you tackled and reflect upon your revised lesson, assignment, test, writing prompt, etc.  How would you rate the "before" lesson and the new "after" lesson?  (Found in the booklet given to you.)

Step Three:  Select one colleague with whom to share the work.  Ask this colleague to use the same rubric and assess the lesson also.  Talk together to determine next steps.

Evaluation

Use one of the rubrics provided to critique your work.  Select from one of the several found in the booklet.

Conclusion

After you have completed your collegial conversations, use the reflection form to share your findings with me.  After all have submitted, I will compile results and share them with the entire group.

Thank you for your hard work, dedication, and for taking the time to reflect on your practice and share with others.

Credits

Share with others any resources you have found valuable while completing this task.  I will compile these for you and distribute to staff members.
