The Real Number System

Introduction

Today in our very first class meeting we are learning about The Number System and all of its’ many breakdowns!

We are going to go through a series of tasks to help you understand and apply these terms in everyday life!

Task

1. Learn definitions of The Real Number System in its’ entirety.

2. Be able to fill in blank chart by placing  given numbers into correct category

3. Interpret real world applications of (TRNS)

Process

First we are going to watch this video to find out the definition and difference is between all of the different kinds of numbers there are because we will be using these all year!

https://youtu.be/Dy8u5MgURaU?si=O44rnFwWj9eSCSuw

Now that we have a little more understanding of each term, let’s take a moment to put it all down on paper for ourselves!

Let’s start with going over the terms we heard.

Real numbers

Rational and (Ir)rational or real and “not” real

where else have you heard these terms used? I’ve heard them used in terms of fears, like having a fear of something that wasn’t likely to happen would be an irrational fear.

rational is broken into integers (whole numbers) and non-rational integers

from there, integers are broken into negative and non-negative integers (natural numbers)

and then broken once more into 0 and positive real numbers

The video also used some main letters to categorize each branch

Can you guys remember any of the numbers used? Try and use the terms above with the letters below to create your own Real Number System guide to keep in your binder to use for the year!

Z< Z- and N

N< 0 and Z+

Now that you have a better grasp on how to categorize them, lets watch this short video on how to use them in daily life and on a separate page, write an example of a way you have used one of these categories in paragraph form explaining your experience. (I.E. natural #120. I travel 120 miles to my grandmothers house for the summer)

Evaluation

This web-quest will be worth 30 points and the students will be judged on the following criteria.

Understanding the Real Number System 10-8 points: Student clearly identifies and gives a clear definition of each category and sub-category involved 7-4 points: Student somewhat understands slope and gives an acceptable definition of slope. 3-0 points: Student does not understand slope and gives a poor definition.
Accuracy of placement of #’s on Ice-Cream activity 10-8 points: Student correctly places 15-20 #’s    7-4 points: Student places 7-14 #’s correctly. 3-0 points: Student places 0-6 numbers correctly.
Paragraph on real world application of the Real Number System 10-8 points: Student constructs a paragraph with a proper and clear explanation of an example/experience with real world application of the number system. At least 3-4 sentences 7-4 points: Student gives an example of a real world application, but does not write a full paragraph 3-0 points: Student gives little to no explanation of a real world application and does not write a full paragraph.

Conclusion

By completing this Web-Quest, I hope you have a better understanding of each term and category under “Real” Numbers! If not, I hope that you will continue to work hard and inquire more knowledge, seeking my help and advice if needed!
