Introduction
Community may be defined as, "a group of people living in the same place or having a particular characteristic in common". That is a pretty vague description for something that is so important to us!
In this webquest, you will look at various types of communities and develop an understand of what it means to live in, and contribute to, a community. You will use what you know about your own community, to compare it to those you will learn about today. By the end of the assignment, my hope is that you understand the importance of communities, how it shapes us, and how we also shape it.
Task
You will research three different communities and become an expert on them. On the worksheet provided you will answer the questions and fill in the chart to gather as much information as possible. Use the links below to start your research:
Victory City http://www.victorycities.com/
The Farm http://www.thefarm.org/index.html
Twin Oaks http://www.twinoakscommunity.org/
Evaluation
You will be graded based on the following criteria:
Focus: I will be watching to see how well you stayed on task. Did you use all of your time wisely? Or did you use this as a time to socialize?
Thoughtfulness: Are you charts filled out with meaningful and relevant information, or did you try to get through it as quickly as possible? I will be checking to see
Thoroughness: Charts are filled in with as much information as possible. There are more than just a few words to describe the community -phrases and complete sentences show me your understanding.
Conclusion
Congratulations! You have now learned about three very different communities. Hopefully, you now know that every community is different, and may appear strange to those who don't live in it. It is also important to note, that no community is perfect. The question now, is, what is YOUR responsibility when it comes to making a difference when you see change is needed?
