Introduction
What is it that makes chemical reactions speed up or slow down?
And what are the benefits of being able to control the speed of a chemical reaction?
Task
Your task is to create a PowerPoint Presentation or similar, which you will grade upon completion with a partner (using the table in the Evaluation Tab) and then decide what you would do to improve it. Please email me your completed presentation.
Your PowerPoint must include the following:
- An introductory slide - name of your presentation including your name
- Reason for speeding: A slide which describes, with an example, at least one reason for why it would be desirable to speed up the rate of a chemical reaction.
- Reason for slowing: A slide which describes, with an example, at least one reason for why it would be desirable to slow down the speed of a chemical reaction.
- List of factors: A slide which lists at least 4 factors that affect the rate of chemical reactions.
- Mechanism: For each of the factors create a separate slide on which you describe the mechanism by which that factor affects the rate of a chemical reaction.
- Personal relevance: Pick one of the factors and explain how it is relevant directly to you.
You may create more slides to personalize your presentation as you wish.
The resources that you have available to use are shown on the process tab. You should watch each of the videos. You may carry out additional research if you wish to but it is not required.
Process
These are the resources that you have available to you:
COLLISION THEORY and Refrigeration industry
Chemistry of Airbags
Area
Catalysts
Biological catalysts are called ENZYMES
Concentration
Hydrogen Peroxide
Evaluation
You need to evaluate your presentation against the following criteria and think about what you could do to improve your knowledge and understanding.
| Slide | Mastery (B) | Beyond Mastery (A) |
|---|---|---|
| Introductory slide | The presentation is appropriately named | The slide contains a relevant graphic and the student's name |
| Reason for increasing rates | A reason for speeding up chemical reactions is explained using an appropriate example. | Additionally a picture or a link is provided to support the reasoning. |
| Reason for decreasing rates | A reason for slowing down chemical reactions is explained using an appropriate example. | Additionally a picture or a link is provided to support the reasoning. |
| List of factors | A list containing at least four appropriate factors. | |
| A slide for each of the factors |
How the factor affects the speed of a reaction is explained on separate slides. The explanations are sound and understandable. |
Additionally slides contain appropriate graphics /pictures/links in order to make the understanding very clear. |
| Relating one factor to your daily life |
Student explains why one of the factors is especially relevant to him/her | Student provides a picture of herself/himself which demonstrates the personalized relevancy of one of the factors to his/her life. |
Conclusion
You should now have an understanding of the different factors that can affect the rate of a reaction.
