Rates and Ratios

Introduction

You will be using the concepts of rates and ratios to determine the best price of a product. Please use your class notes as needed during the completion of this assignments.

Task

Mrs. Jones is on a fixed income. She would like to purchase a cell phone plan that is affordable and the best deal. Your task is to look up the plans for 1 person using a basic smart phone that includes talk, text, and data capabilities. You need to compare the prices of at least 3 different companies. In your final project, you will include a display that demonstrates the different plans available. The final answer to the project will be a paragraph explaining which company has the best deal for Mrs. Jones and using rates and ratios to back up your reasoning.

Process

1. Determine which cell phone companies you will compare. You need at least 3, although you may use up to 5 if you wish.

2. Determine the unit rate of the cost of 1 cell phone with talk, text, and web. Determine the cost for unlimited or metered.

3. Create a display showing your information.

4. Write a paragraph explaining which company has the better offer. In this paragraph, you will use the data you have collected to back up your claims.

Evaluation

Exceeds Expectation: 5 Meets Expectation: 3 Does not Meet Expectation: 1
Mathematics Process All steps for every mathematics process is shown Some steps for mathematical process is shown None of the steps of the mathematical process is shown
Display The display is clearly laid out in an attractive fashion that includes the mathematical process, the best buy, the paragraph, and an explanation of what was learned through the Webquest. The display is clearly laid out in an attractive fashion that includes the mathematical process, the best buy, the paragraph. The display is awkward and has missing pieces
Paragraph

The written paragraph includes the process used to determine the best cell phone plan for Mrs. Jones. It uses the mathematical data to back up the chosen plan.

A second paragraph is written reflecting upon what you learned through this process.

Both paragraphs follow the appropriate mechanics and conventions of writing

The written paragraph includes the process used to determine the best cell phone plan for Mrs. Jones. It uses the mathematical data to back up the chosen plan. The written paragraph is disorganized, has faulty or in-complete information and does not include the appropriate mechanics and conventions of writing.
