Public Speaking

Introduction

At some point in your academic lifetime, you will be performing the art of public speaking (yay!!!).  You have already witnessed some great speakers, as well as, some not-so-great speakers, so you may have some knowledge in this area.  In this webquest, you will become the expert and judge the public speaking of others.  You decide who does it well and who needs to go back to "Public Speaking 101".

Task

Your task is to critique or grade at least 5 speeches using the "You Be the Judge" rubric.  Once you have analyzed your data from the "You Be the Judge" rubric, you will have to decide which speaker is the best and write a paper supporting your claim.

Process

Step 1:

"You Be The Judge" Rubric:  Please print 5 copies of the rubric

Once you have 5 copies of the rubric printed, you can begin the next step.

Step 2:

Below you will find a list of websites that contain videos of public speakers.  Please choose at least 5 speakers to watch (and watch again).

While you watch each speaker you must decide how to grade each speaker using the printed rubric.  This may require you to watch each speaker several times as the rubric is detailed.

Step 3:

Based on the information that you collected on the 5 speakers, choose one speaker that displayed the best public speaking skills and write a paper detailing why you chose that speaker.  Your paper should be a standard 5 paragraph paper with a thesis, 3 body paragraphs, and a conclusion.
