Introduction
Your brain is a sneaky magician, pulling off tricks so wild you don’t even know it’s happening. You think you’re in control, but really, your brain is over here pulling the strings like a puppet master, making you do all sorts of weird stuff without you even realizing it. Welcome to the world of cognitive and behavioral psychology—where your brain is the mastermind and you're just the confused sidekick. Cognitive psychology is a branch of psychology that studies how people think, perceive, remember, and make decisions. It focuses on the mental processes that underlie human behavior, such as: attention, memory, perception, language, problem-solving, and decision-making. Behaviorism is a psychological theory that focuses on how people and animals learn through interactions with their environment. It's based on the idea that all behaviors are acquired through conditioning, stimuli, and observable behavior. In this webquest, you'll explore how our minds work and why we behave the way we do. You’ll dive into two important psychological theories—cognitive psychology and behaviorism. Ready to understand what drives your thoughts and actions? Let’s get started.
Task
Your task is to explore different aspects of cognitive and behavioral psychology through research, activities, and case studies. You will watch three, five minute, videos, take notes on two slide shows, and look at two case studies. After, you will answer questions on the information you were given. At the end of the WebQuest, you will:
1. Explain the key concepts of both Cognitive and Behavioral Psychology
2. Compare and contrast the cognitive and behavioral approaches to psychology.
3. Explain the way Cognitive Psychology and Behaviorism are used in a real classroom
4. Apply psychological principles to a real-world scenario, creating a solution based on your understanding of cognitive and behavioral psychology.
This will be put into a presentation and sent in for grading.
Process
1. Introduction to Key Theories:
- Cognitive Psychology: Go through the attached slides and pay special attention to topics like memory, perception, decision-making, and problem-solving. What the YouTube video and keep in mind the technology that changed the field of psychology and the basic concepts explained. Take note to keep up with all of the information give.
- Behavioral Psychology: Look at the attached slides and be sure to note the basic principles of behaviorism. Take care to look at the types of learning and conditioning, specifically classical and operant conditioning. Watch the YouTube video on Pavlov's Classical Conditioning and Skinner's Operant Conditioning, and take notes on how punishment and reward could be used in classroom settings.
2. Research and Analyze Case Studies:
- Cognitive Case Study: Research a famous cognitive experiment (e.g., the Stroop Effect, Piaget’s stages of cognitive development). Summarize the experiment and explain what it reveals about cognitive processes.
- Behavioral Case Study: Investigate B.F. Skinner’s work on operant conditioning or Ivan Pavlov’s research on classical conditioning. Choose one and explain how it has been used in real-world applications (e.g., in education or therapy).
3. Apply Knowledge to a Real-World Scenario:
- Using the notes you've taken and prior knowledge, think about these scenarios and develop strategies and plans to use
- A teacher is trying to improve student behavior in the classroom. Using principles from both cognitive and behavioral psychology, develop strategies for the teacher to apply.
- You are counseling a client struggling with anxiety. Develop a plan that incorporates cognitive and behavioral strategies (e.g., cognitive-behavioral therapy techniques).
4. Create Your Final Project:
- Based on your research, create a presentation (PowerPoint or Canva Slide show) that:
- Explains the key concepts of cognitive and behavioral psychology.
- Compares and contrasts both approaches.
- Explains the way Cognitive Psychology and Behaviorism are used in a classroom.
- Applies these concepts to the real-world scenarios provided in step 3.
- You can use graphics, charts, and videos to make your project engaging.
Conclusion
By completing this WebQuest, you’ve gained a deeper understanding of the cognitive and behavioral approaches to psychology. You’ve explored how these theories can explain human behavior and thought processes and how they can be applied to real-world issues. Of course, questions like "Consider how cognitive psychologists might study the process of problem-solving. How could they design an experiment to examine the mental steps involved in solving a complex problem, and what variables might affect these steps?" and "Behaviorism focuses heavily on external behavior rather than internal mental processes. How might this limitation affect its ability to explain complex human behaviors like creativity or emotion regulation?" are question you can ask yourself or even have a conversation with someone else about. Hopefully, you now have a greater appreciation for the complexities of the human mind and behavior!
