Introduction
You will be working with patients everyday. It will be important for you to be able to explain to your patient why they have to have certain tests. It is not your job to diagnose but to explain what is happening; to educate and reassure your patient is part of your daily tasks. For this activity however we will be playing the role of doctor and nurse. We will try to diagnose in very broad terms what migt be happening with our patient.
Urninalysis is a very important diagnostic. It is important you know what certain values mean in order to give IV's and maintain fluid balance in your patients. Yes the doctor will advise you but you need to know what is going on. What if the doctor makes a mistake? They get tired and can make mistakes so we need to be aware of what is going on.
Now it is time to meet your patients.
Task
You will be assigned a patient by role of the dice.
Your task is to take initial patient information from your patient. You will be working with another nurse as a team. Double check the work and complete the basic assessment form.
Since this patient is having some problems lab tests have been rushed at your very private and exclusive Clinic for the Rich and Famous.
Once you receive the test results you are to research possible causes and submit your ideas to the head nurse (me). Did I mention your patients are Rock Stars and Reality TV Personalities. You may want to avoid the paparazzi.
Process
1.
Download the Patient Assessment form from Dropbox Class Folder.
https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B05tnIDx1z0JQVdvNVNxRGNuTk0/edit?usp=sharing
2. Roll the dice to see which patient belongs to your team. Get patient information from me. Is it Snooki or Brett?
3. Watch the You Tube video on Head to Toe Assessment to review concepts from your nursing class.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Fxb8icOTOA
Perform Basic Assessment on the Patient. Fillin information using our simulation mannequins, the 'patient' and data in the patient history folder.
4. Turn in your Patient Assessment to the head nurse (yep that's me).
5. Read Understanding Urine Results http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmedhealth/PMH0010405/
While reading complete the corresponding outline
https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B05tnIDx1z0JNTNtM05oZ2ZjRU0/edit?usp=sharing
6. Complete the Virtual Urinaylsis Lab
https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B05tnIDx1z0JRmx6aENSTHI0a0E/edit?usp=sharing
Use the worksheets imbedded in the lab to complete Macroscopic Observations, Chemstix Urinalysis, and Microscopic Observation. You do not need to complete the Urinalysis questions. If you have trouble downloading the worksheets I have copies we can use.
7. Bring me the completed data sheets to get your final urine test results.
8. Using the final piece of data look at health history, the health assessment, and the urine results to help determine what might be going on with your patient. Diagnosis is the last page of our health assessment worksheet. If you need more room feel free to use the space below the diagnosis.
These websites may help you in your quest:

Your book is also an excellent source of information. If you are still having trouble, each team is allowed to ask the head nurse five specific clarifying questions. Anymore questions would lead to a two point deduction from the total grade.
Good Luck

Conclusion
I hope that this project was a wonderful review for your head to toe assessment procedure and an introduction to urinalysis.
I would hope you also understand that testing urine can explain many aspects of the human body in a quick, cost effective way.It may not be glamorous like our patients today, but it is a very large part of nursing care.
Thank you for your time and efforts in this webquest.
