Introduction

We are surrounded by products vying for attention. As consumers, what should we buy? That which is the cheapest? The most durable?The tastiest?

And what about ethics...are big companies creating their products in ways that help or harm society? It's important to be a responsible shopper and think before we buy.

In this webquest you will research a well known company and decide for yourself whether they are an ethical company or not!

 

Task

1. Select ONE company: Starbucks, Mars (candy, snacks, ets), Adidas, McDonald's, or IKEA. 

2. Visit their website first (linked in "process") and read about their social responsibility.

3. Visit a different website (linked in "process") and get an outside opinion.

4. Answer the questions based on your research.

5. Create a padlet (3C) OR Prepare a short PPT using your findings (3D).

Process

1. Select a company

  • Starbucks

2. Visit the website for your chosen company.

3. Write down THREE things the company says about its ethics. (For example, Coca-Cola says it set a target to reduce emissions 25% by 2030). Be sure to use an online dictionary so you understand what is being said.

4. Now visit an outside website for your chosen company

5. Write down THREE things the website claims about your chosen company. (For example, Coca-Cola was named the world’s most polluting brand.) Be sure to use an online dictionary so you understand what is being said.

6. 3C:

  • Type your company and class number as the title
  • Type one thing the company claims it is doing to be ethical
  • Type one thing an outside source says about the ethics of the company
  • Is the company responsible? 

    3D:

  • Create a FOUR slide PPT.
    • Slide 1: Title, product, name
    • Slide 2: Three things the company says about its ethics
    • Slide 3: Three things an outside source says about the ethics
    • Slide 4: Is the company responsible? Do they seem to be taking steps to be more ethical?
