Poetry WebQuest

Introduction

Good Day Grade 10's and welcome to our lesson on WebQuest.

We will be starting with poetry. Today we will be looking at what poetry is and what it means I will give you a task that you must complete and you have to present it to the class.

Poetry is often seen as confusing and hard to understand but it is a very misunderstood drama. There are three main poetic forms which is lyric, narrative and dramatic. Each of these forms can be divided into subdivisions consisting of rhyme scheme, rhythm and / or style. Poetry captures the moments that no other form of writing can. It provides you with the thoughts of the speaker as well as the feelings and beliefs using beautiful but sometimes complex language.

Through this WebQuest you will begin to explore poetry as a whole finding a area that interest you, whether it is a certain poet or type of poem narrowing that exploration so can understand the aspects of poetry that you choose. This WebQuest will deepen your knowledge of poetry and you will be able to answer questions pertaining a poem. Hopefully you will have more interest as we will be covering poetry in class starting this term.

Let's get started!

Task

When this WebQuest lesson is finished  you must be ready to present a topic of your interest in poetry in the classroom. You will have to do one of the following options as a presentation in class:

  • PowerPoint presentation on the poet or poem.
  • Write a poem that is in a particular style that you taken liking to. Explaining the rules of this style you have chosen and why this style is unique.
  • Write a report or summary of your research. NB ( Not longer than one page)
  • Analysis of a particular poem.

Any creative idea you can come up with as long as the class is provided with some knowledge. I will also be open to any ideas you want to run before me for your presentation.

This WebQuest on poetry will challenge you to do research, use the media and technology, helping you to be able to read and understand. You will also come to understand the poetry is a type of literature that serves a record of the human experience.

Process

STEP 1

Go to www.poetry.org and read on the main page what poetry means. Use that information and try and write in your own words what it is that you think poetry means. Look at the history, the types of poetry by clicking on more on the page. Read through everything and briefly to through the section until you fiend something you like. As you read write what you like and make notes of the types of poetry, the history and what poetry is.

STEP 2

Once you done and feel you have a understanding of what poetry is go to www.poetryfondation.org and explore some of the poets and poetry under the tab 'Poets and Poetry'. Between all the poets and poems choose the one you like the most write a short paragraph about why you chose that particular poet or poem and why it is your favourite.

STEP 3

Now when you have all that information you can create your own poem. Feel free and use your imagination when you are writing your poems and make it your own, changing words the style as long as it is your own.

STEP 4

By now you should have an idea of what it is you like in poetry is it the rhyme, the style, words that is used or the poet, history or writing it? You can start looking at your options for the presentations and decide which one it is you are going to present. Be creative when you coming up with ways for your presentation. You can do a biography of a poet, poetry art or a rap.

This will be done over a period of classes for you to get enough time to research your topic and create some sort of report.

Evaluation

This task will not be for marks, however I will give feedback on your presentations and have a class discussion on what your experiences was preparing for your presentations.

Remember learners even if you not being formally assessed on this task try and do your best.

Teacher Page

This lesson is not for really much prior knowledge that leaners needs to know is more about building their knowledge before beginning with poetry. It is very broad and open ended challenging learners to do research and going in to depth about poetry it also challenge learners in the sense of maturity because this task has a lot of freedom.

It will help learners to explore their own interest within poetry and it is also beneficial because with this task I can see where leaners are with their knowledge on poetry if they actually did the research and what they are willing to bring to the table. After the learners presentation I can see at what level learners are and that will help me to adjust my planning and help learners grasp poetry better when I teach it.
