Introduction
You are going to be learning about different types of poetry, so you can write your own poem. Try your best because your poem will be graded, and the best will be chosen to be entered into a contest.
Task
Click on each web address link to learn about the different types of poetry. You will have to pick your favorite type of poetry to create your own poem using the correct structure. Be sure to take notes on the handout to remember the different structures you read about, and follow directions to receive the best grade possible. Have fun, and use as much figurative language (play on words) as possible.
Process
1. Click on the link to learn about limerick poetry, and answer questions 1 - 2 on the handout: http://www.kidzone.ws/poetry/limerick.htm.
2. Read the poem "Star" and click on 3 of the examples to read limerick poems. Then answer 3 - 4 on the handout.
3. Click on the link to learn about Haiku poetry, and answer questions 5 - 7 on the handout: http://www.kidzone.ws/poetry/haiku.htm.
4. Read at least 3 of the example poems and answer questions 8 - 9 on the handout.
5. Click on the link to learn about acrostic poetry and answer questions 10 - 11 on the handout: http://www.kidzone.ws/poetry/acrostic.htm.
6. Read at least 3 examples of acrostic poetry and answer questions 12 - 14 on the handout.
Evaluation
Okay, this is your chance to make an awesome grade! Here is what you have to do to receive a whopping 100!
1. On the back of your handout, write the type of poem you are going to write.
2. Brainstorm a topic and ideas for your poem.
3. Write a rough draft of your poem, and read over it to edit and revise.
4. Finally, open a word document and type your poem with the following guidelines:
a. Choose a font and use size 18.
b. Click on the center icon to type your poem in the center of the page.
c. Type your title first and then your name under it. Skip a space before you type the poem.
d. Reread your poem out loud after you finish typing it to check for mistakes.
e. Click on "file" and "save as desktop", then rename the document "your name poetry project". (Example: Sally's Poetry Project) Finally, click save and close document.
f. Email me and attach your poem as a copy.
g. Make sure your name, date, and number is on the handout and turn it in.
