Plate Tectonics

Introduction

Hello young scientists!

In today's web quest, we will be exploring the concept of plate tectonics and how this explains the relative ages of crustal rocks.

You will be learning about convergent boundaries, divergent boundaries, and transform boundaries.

Good Luck!

Task

1. Read this page on an introduction to plate tectonics: https://www.khanacademy.org/science/middle-school-earth-and-space-science/x87d03b443efbea0a:the-geosphere/x87d03b443efbea0a:plate-tectonics/a/introduction-to-plate-tectonics

2. Watch this video on plate tectonics and the age of the sea floor:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RTTr_6vfibc

3. Go to this page and explore the interactive plate tectonics model: https://www.amnh.org/explore/ology/earth/plates-on-the-move2/game

Evaluation

Good job completing all of the tasks.

Your final assignment is to create a powerpoint sharing what you learned about plate tectonics.

Your powerpoint should include:

  • a title slide
  • a definition of plate tectonics
  • a description of the 3 types of plate boundaries
  • an explanation as to how plate tectonics compares the relative ages of continental crust vs. oceanic crust

Your final powerpoint will be turned in through google classroom.

Teacher Page

This WebQuest was designed to help students learn the basics of plate tectonics and how it connects to the relative ages of earth's crust in accordance with the NGSS standard HS-ESS1-5.

ESS1-5. Evaluate evidence of the past and current movements of continental and oceanic crust and the theory of plate tectonics to explain the ages of crustal rocks.
