Plastic pollution

Introduction

This class is dedicated to global problems, mainly plastic pollution. As a ‘hook’ I want to show a water bottle and ask the question: ‘What do you think happens when you finish your drink and throw the bottle away?’ This will trigger thinking process in students, and the class mainly consists of open -end questions to trigger independent thinking.

Open-end question.

  1. Do you think that plastic pollution is a serious problem?
  2. What is the cause of plastic pollution?
  3. What is the solution of plastic pollution?
  4. Do you see examples of plastic pollution in your everyday life?
  5. As an individual what can be your contribution to reduce plastic pollution?

This set of questions will trigger thinking in students. Admittedly, many of them may not have clear understanding of plastic pollution, or pollution at all but examples of peers will give them much clearer understanding.

They can discuss each other’s opinions as they may have different approach towards the issue.  The discussion can be supported by photos about plastic pollution.

While plastic has many valuable uses, we have become addicted to single-use plastic products — with severe environmental, social, economic and health consequences.

Around the world, one million plastic bottles are purchased every minute, while up to five trillion plastic bags are used worldwide every year. In total, half of all plastic produced is designed for single-use purposes – used just once and then thrown away.

Plastics including microplastics are now ubiquitous in our natural environment. They are becoming part of the Earth's fossil record and a marker of the Anthropocene, our current geological era. They have even given their name to a new marine microbial habitat called the "plastisphere".

Task

The first task will be watching video and deciding how far their opinions were correct. They should evaluate the direction of their thinking. Besides this they will learn new real-life information.

Students will learn how they will be able to contribute to the reduction of plastic pollution, how we can prevent pollution and the ways to recycle plastic.

As a child they tend to throw trash outside without realizing its consequences, so this WebQuest will help them to be more careful.

Process

The WebQuest will be in two part. The first part will give information about plastic pollution, the second part will inform students about their contribution and ways to recycle pollution. The WebQuest is designed for 5th grade students

Lesson 1. Lesson starts from asking open-end questions to gather student’s opinion. This lesson will cover:

Lesson 2. This lesson will consider the ways to reduce pollution and how students can contribute to this. Lesson will cover:

  • Fast facts on pollution as brush up of previous lesson
  • Ways to prevent pollution, which is given in a form of matching exercise.
  • The discussion of how student contribute to the pollution and how can they contribute to the reduction of pollution.
  • Ways to recycle plastic (video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_6xlNyWPpB8 )
  • And group work on way to recycle the plastic.

A group work involves students to be in small groups and imagine that they are the members of company that recycles plastic. Their task is to decide what they can recycle the plastic into and try to prove why they chose those objects.

The two lessons will help students to understand the plastic pollution process and help them to contribute to prevention of plastic pollution .

Evaluation

As it is the WebQuest mainly focusing on speaking skills, teacher will evaluate their speaking skills. Also evaluation can be made by assessing the tasks provided.

Conclusion

The topic of plastic pollution may seem a bit difficult for 5th grade students. However, with correct approach and examples teacher can make students be aware of the global environmental problem. If people learn about those problems at their early ages, they will be responsible.

The videos and tasks may be changed according to the level of he class. The examples should be based on real life, this way it will be easier for students to grasp the topic.
