Plants and How they Reproduce

Introduction

The Great Plant Escape

Welcome to the Great Plant Escape!

My name is Bud. My good friend Sprout and I are helping Detective LePlant on his search. You will find that plants are an important part of your life. We will need your help to find clues, do experiments, and solve problems as we journey into the world of plants. He promises lots of fun, but remember, we're here to solve a mystery!

Good luck! We'll be with you all the way!

Task

Detective Le Plant has taken you on an adventure through the world of plants. As his assistant, he has shown you the inner workings of seeds, flowers and other plant parts. He has also shown you what is needed for plants to grow and be happy. Have fun leading others through the world of plants.

Process

Goals

When you finish this case, you should be able to:

  • List the important things needed for plant growth.

  • Help in the growth of a living organism.

  • Demonstrate knowledge and use of words related to seeds and plants.

  • Read to find answers to questions.

  • Describe and record observations.

  • Listen for answers and new information.

  • Describe how plants grow and what they need to grow.

  • Make guesses about lettuce and its growth (time, size, color, etc.)

Ideas

While you're solving the mysteries, pay special attention to these key ideas:

  • Plants are made up of different parts. Each part has a certain job. These parts can also help us to identify plants.

  • You can eat certain plant parts. They are important food sources for both humans and other animals.

  • There are seven basic requirements that plants need in order to grow properly: temperature, light, water, air, nutrients, time, and room to grow.

  • Plants can be grown both indoors and outdoors for food, shelter, clothing, medicine, energy, and pleasure.

What Parts of the Plant Do We Eat?

A large part of what people eat is made up of plants or parts of plants. In fact, plants contain many of the nutrients that help us live healthy lives. The examples below are what Sprout ate yesterday. For each box think about what else people eat. Print this page to write your answers.
