Planter to Table

Introduction

Where does your food come from?

Your local grocery store has announced that they will be closing in the fall.  You have just realized that you will have no way to get fresh vegetables.  You have decided to become a gardener!  You will need to design an outline for your planter, determine your agricultural growing zone, and what plants are suitable. You will need to choose a recipe that utilizes items from your own harvest. You will need to construct the planter to carry your harvest home.

Task

Well, you are the gardener and you have some chores to take care of before you can plant your garden.

  1. You first need to decide what style garden you will design.

  2. Secondly you will need to determine your agricultural growing  zone.  This information will help to determine what type of plants you are able to grow in your garden.

  3. The information that you collect will be used to build and draw your garden out on graph paper.  This will be a scale model of your garden.  The drawing will include the dimensions of the garden, plant type and plant position

  4. Choose a recipe that utilizes items from your harvest.
  5. Include along with the recipe a method for storing, handling, and reheating the food.
  6. Construct a harvest bag.

Process

You are the one in charge!  What type of garden will you grow?

You must do some research as to what type of garden you will grow.  You can select from our recycled materials to build your planter.

Day 1: What agricultural zone your garden is located in will determine the plants that you can successfully grow.  Use the resource listed below. Fill in the research guide for day 1 with the information you find.

Day 2: Now that your design is determined, as well as your zone, and plant types you need to decide how the plants will be positioned for best growth.

First take a look at plants that grow well here in Colorado http://denver.cbslocal.com/2012/04/04/5-must-grow-items-for-your-denver-garden/.

Finally, the scale drawing of your garden! Include your plant types and position. Make an effort to use color for the plants!  Determine an appropriate scale for your graph paper that will allow you to show off your garden design and plant growth.  The alternative to this project can be a virtual tour of a garden that incorporates your design, agricultural zone, and plant types.  You then need to include an approximate harvest time for your produce.
