Picnic in East Egg

Introduction

The Roaring Twenties was a new era built on social and political change. With the introduction of spending credit and Henry Ford’s new "Model T" automobile, the 1920’s started a social movement that transformed the lifestyle of all Americans. Galas were social conventions that many upper class civilians attended as their evening affairs. Like Gatsby, the nouveau riche excelled at throwing glamorous shindigs to accentuate their expensive tastes. However, the old money residence of inheritance thought it appropriate to host more sophisticated gatherings.
